Hi folks. Newbie here. Just ordered my new Golf GTi for March delivery. Tentatively ordered it in Tornado Red, but am now thinking black. But which black.
Black or Diamond Black? Is there much difference?

Candy white is the future!

Diamond black has a fine pearlescent finish. Much better and classier than standard black IMHO
Both will be a pig to keep clean but they look great when detailed. After black, red would be my second choice.
I still think white is a minority colour and will not be so sought after come resale time.
Still, it's your car and you should buy whatever colour floats your own boat

Standard black is free though.... ;)
Am I a cheap skate? Yes.

Yes, White in 3 door with nice wheels looks the best.
White will have better second hand appeal, on account of their rarity and coolness :-)

Silver

Silver
Seconded

has to be black or white, dont mess about with any other carppy colours
*ducks and hides in a bomb shelter*

Thanks for the alternates.... but my decision is:
a) keep the Red on order
b) order Black, no need to change finance agreement
c) order Diamond Black - need to change finance agreement
I'm leaning towards b) regular Black.

nooooooo diamond black looks amazing, especially after a sunday afternoon wax  and then you can join the best colour club

green, brown, or orange. Or combination. And red interior. Merry Xmas!

Solid black shows scratches very badly and I suspect could be the worst possible colour for resale. Solid red has a tendence to fade and will certainly make resale difficult as the car gets older (5yrs+). It requires a lot of waxing to avoid this. I'm a little biased but I think Candy White is the only solid colour to seriously consider and it simply looks amazing (in 5dr as well as 3dr). There are very few cars white works on but the Golf GTI is close to top of the list (alongside a very select group including the 911 GT3). Many journos have pointed this out and on the right cars its the colour of the moment. In my case, the very attractive spec and price made me brave I'll admit.
If you must go for black then I think it has to be pearl. Otherwise that mid blue metallic looks very good IMHO and is also rare. I have a suspicion it could be the Oak Green (an iconic mk2 colour) of the future.

Pearlescent magic black !!!!!
People do say its a common colour but i've only seen 2 other black GTIs where i live. Red and silver seems to be the popular colour around here

I'd have to agree that flat black, red and white show swirl marks up over time. Pearl Black is the best of your colour options by far

Indeed, come and join the BGTIC
Diamond Black is amazing and does not look that crappy when dirty, but does look amazing when clean.
Fastest colour araound!!

One of the reasons I dismissed black was because I couldn't work out which was the black I'd choose!
What if you end up choosing the wrong one? Can you deal with that stress?
There is only one candy white!
(Is that officially the last lame excuse for choosing a particular colour? Any more...?)
-
.........& black is a right b*****d to keep clean.
-
dont get black actually get white. With all the whites coming into the market my black gti should soon be exclusive
-
If I lived in Cape Town I'd go for white. My wife's from there and we visited earlier in the year. White cars look good in all that sun, and it's a popular colour.
I've gone with (thanks to peer pressure) Diamond Black Pearl. Now the long wait begins.

My last car was Steel grey and it looked great. Clean or dirty

white is free as well

Here follows my completely unbiased opinion:
Steel Grey looks awesome.
Harks back to the fantastic Atlas Grey on the Mk2 GTi's.

My GTI is plain black and looks great when clean and polished but it's an utter bast**d to keep clean. Black also shows up minor scratches and whorls really badly.
The GTI is my first and last black car; it's back to ultra-easy-to-keep silver in future!

I've had one black car and will never have another. Total nightmare to clean and showed all the scratches and imperfections in the paintwork . Reflex silver is extremely low maintenance and in my opinion shows the red line on the front grill off the best of all the colours, but then again I'm biased.

The great thing about white is that it looks great even when it's dirty.
The appeal of this colour is that it allows you to see the subtle design details that are masked by darker colours or the reflections of metallic paint, and it contrasts with the black stuff so that the shape of the glass and light clusters is emphasised, which is a nice thing. I'd always go for a dark colour on a car whose design was a little iffy in places, but in this instance, you really want something that will bring the design details out.
I was really suprised at how in twilight, white even looks better. The glass areas effectively become black, with the bodywork picked out even more strongly. (In the gardening world, they always say to go for white flowers if you want a good twilight summer garden display!)
Just one example - the way the windscreen and bodywork relate to one another, with a thin lip coming down the pillars that develops into a deep dark sweep where the wipers live.
Another example - the subtle haunch at the back that blends as it goes forward - or the crease along the bottom of the door that fades out as you go back.
Is that enough bullsHeet about white yet?

Are you going to drive that car Andy - or make love to it

<quote>Are you going to drive that car Andy - or make love to it</quote>
It's been 10 years since I last had a new car...it's taking a lot of self control!
Having said that, white is the obvious colour for someone who is overtaken by their urges. (or should that be  )
-
That's a long time to wait for a new car
My wife sometimes says I love my car more than her!
Lets just say it's a close second  ....err...the car that is

BMW's shots of the M3 in white are also rather stunning. The colour does the same job as white on the golf - picks out all the subtle detailing which can be swallowed up on the darker colours, without searing your retinas like red or (yellow  ) would.

That's a long time to wait for a new car
It's Peugeot's fault. I had a string of them right up to the 306gti-6 (which was a cracking car in its time). Then Peugeot brought in a load of accountants to help them design the replacements, which, needless to say, resemble blancmange, and drove like one too.
I held on in the hope they'd see the errors of their bland ways, but latest incarnation looks like a blancmange which has had a face swap with a grouper. It's not a good look:

What a dog's dinner  So, goodbye Peugeot, hello VW!

MMMMMMMMM
BMW M3 is a top car, but the driver image it has is
