I am now looking a getting another golf, My 8v is dying
have been looking other 8v 90 spec mk2. but in the a voice in my head tells me to get a 16v.
my question is, how much is it going to cost me to run?
not worried about insurance (over 30) things like fuel, they need to run super right.
when it goes wrong, are they pricey to fix.
a little advice please. :undecided:

 makes me laugh, did we have super unleaded about when the old MkII were new ????
or did we just have leaded and unleaded. . . . . .
-
can you still get leaded,
-
can you still get leaded,
not now, but back when a 1990 GTi was new you could.
time for a poll me thinks
-
can you still get leaded,
Yes you can but it's expensive and generally only available from motorsport outlets. I used to run my mini on it for track days /4 miles etc.

nice to see the poll
but what about the other stuff
plus i have no idea about the kjet system, is it as easy as the dig
go on give your opinons

I have owned both cars and think they're both great in their own ways... it depends wot you want.
The later 8V (PB) is a more modern engine (electronic fuel injection) compared to the 16V (manual K-jet) so runs better without 16V niggles.
The 16V however is more powerful and can be redlined @ 7200 RPM whereas the 8V runs out @ 6300.
Cos of the longer gears and the rev range the 16v is slow off the line but picks up betwwen 3500-4000 RPM and it goes!!! However the 8V is more torquey so quick off the line but runs out quick top end.
You also got to consider if you want induction kits etc. The 16V can't take one because the fuel injection distributor (K-jet) but the late 8v can. Also 16v's come with electric windows etc but so do some late 8v's.
So do you want a high reving (more thirsty thou) 16V? or a smooth running torquey 8V?
They're both great but the 16v has it's problems but is noticably quicker... I chose the 16V!!!

thanks for that.
i need to use it every day so it looks like an 8v for me.
16v would be a good weekend car it seems

Get a 16v, after a while you'll laugh that you even questioned it..

At 30 i can't see the insurance being much different between the 2 and I don't think theres much difference economy wise unless you're booting it all the time.
my 16v will do 40 mpg on a run and 25+ around town....and is for sale.
-
i know have seen it
looks good :undecided:
a bit of a treck tho
-
Answer to the question........yes you should!
-
Yes and my insurance was £10 more at 24 when I got it. Go for a test drive in one and you'll buy it !! :)

simply yes.....ive had both mk2 8v's and 16v's love both...but the 16v just has bit more about it...and worth going for over a 8v...
only reason ive got a 8v just now is ...looked at 8 mk2's 8v and 16v's and couldnt find what i was looking for untill i came across my current 8v...great car but just missing little bit extra especialy at higher speeds

Can you fit a supercharger or turbo to a 8v?

thanks for the advice, looks like i will being viewing some valvers
cheers

 Hi.... Was looking to put a 9A into my GTi but the cost is becoming an issue. Has anyone had any success with re mapping the Digifant computer to get any more out of the 8V. Someone mentioned an induction upgrade for the 8v that is not an option for the 16v. Can anyone elaborate on that Please. My 8v has an adjustable cam gear and a better exhaust manifold so I'm thinking about going with a 2 litre Audi block upgrade instead. Anyone got any ideas on what the HP gain might be.

you can get a charged 8v ,

the mk2 g60 is supercharged 8v engine....dont ever build a car you can buy although not many g60's kicking about....
you could turbo a 8v ...but be just as well to stick a 20vt engine in there....
on a personal note my favorite mk2 they ever did was the mk2 1.8 16v g60...now thats a ubber rare car...and the best they ever did...
and on the note of running on super fuel...its a must ...as supposed to run any mk2 on 98ron fuel or higher...read ur manual if u disagree...or ask the dealer...should have a sticker on inside of ur petrol cap that tells you this...they will run on 95ron but not very well compared with 98ron or higher....unless you get timming adjusted to suit 95ron....but you dont buy a mk2 gti for good mpg??? do you??? its for having fun and using as much fuel as possible and pissing off every tree hugger in the world

My fave as well. Only 71 made IIRC and they cost £25,000 (£54,000 in today's money). It was only until they released the R32 that they ever made a faster GTI. Just for you:

Ive had both, loved the speed of the 16v and wasnt that bad on fuel, got an 8v now, its good at what it does and cheaper to fix if it goes wrong, saves me a few quid on insurance as well.
test drive a 16v and make your mind up then, although a drive of a decent 16v will have you wanting one, i wish i never sold mine
