Title: Clutch started slipping in deep water

Had to go through some deepish water yesterday.  Halfway through it the clutch starts slipping.  Now I know that water could act as a lubricant but how can it get to the clutch?  Thought they were in a sealed casing.  Car got better as soon as I cleared the water.

Any ideas, and is the clutch probably buggered now or not.
