i got a fairly mint 8v gti 90spec for £500 notes, needed a power steering rack/pipes, and h/brake needs attention..it had 3 months MOT and TAX at the time...

You should be able to get a fairly decent one for that, or buy a cheap one and use the rst of the cash to treat it

Mine was £500 and a good un apart from a manky passenger door.
People always want a premium for so-called minters and it's not always worth it if you can sort out a few minor problems/blemishes yourself I reckon.

When I was looking, £500 wouldn't have stretched very far. Dolly must have been lucky! The cheapest motors I found were in my local paper, being sold by families etc, who weren't that "into" cars.

Mate you'll love the MK2. It will def put a smile on your face if you compare it to a Rover.

good luck with the hunt. keep your eyes peeled, there are always bargains flying around.

Who said lucky... took me 6-8 months of searching lol... i missed a couple, couple too far away but i waited didnt want to get carried away and buy a shed.

ebay is obvious place to look, piston  heads is a very very good site where private ad's are free, autotrader throws up very occasional bargins and of course local papers/bargin pages...

Good luck

i found mine on ebay!

beware of ebay though......for christs sake make sure you go have a look at it before you buy. i checked out a couple of right old dogs on there and the discriptions were far from acurate.

but hey....even if you do bid and win the car, if it isnt as discribed then your within ya rights to walk away anyway.

Bought mine on ebay as well, it must be 'the' place for red golf GTi's - although you guys got more doors than me???

I am considering selling it now though after almost a year, they really are great cars and it sailed through the MOT, I just don't really use it that much at the moment and could do without the added expense.  Only does 1.5 miles a day at the moment and on some days it would be quicker to walk!

Would probably sell it for what I paid for it.

I agree with the guys, there are loads about........maybe take a mate with you how knows a bit about them. I am sure once you have bought 1 though you will be spending pennies changing this & that, it just gets hold of you & gives you the Dub Bug

mate i had a rover 216 gsi twin cam 16v 110 bhp iirc  not that long ago b4 my last 3 golfs was nowhere near as fast as my gti 8v 112bhp mk2

and the rover never put a smile on my face (added that to stop being slagged off)no serious
however the golf always peels a smile on my young mush

I paid £750 for mine... though was the first decent car for under £1000 that I found (wasn't only looking at VWs either). Got it in a pretty good condition too...

my last one before "der panza" was a 160 quid ebay special.  had long mot and no tax and was miles away but in very good nick. just needed a drivers door to make good. even the interior was good
