Title: New GTi Owner - first post here
Post by: drisser on 08 December 2007, 22:31
Hi there all

New member here and picked up my GTi today

I had a brand new audi TT roadster with the same 2.0T engine and was a lovely car, but it had to go.  I had it 'keyed' twice in 3 months due to not having off road parking.  SHocking really people get so offended but after getting first scratch repaired at £600 cost, when it got done again 3 weeks later it was the final straw. I also wanted to get something a little cheaper i could actually pay off and own for a couple of years

I managed to get a good deal due to audi dealer also having vw in the group so only lost 2k on my TT in 3 months.  I went for a VW stock car as didnt want to wait and have gone for a fairly basic spec rather than pay 25k +

Diamond Black Pearl
6cd changer
18 inch monza II (essential, no ?!)
Front armrest
Rear tinted windows

its a shame the half leather chairs from the edition 30 arent avail as an option as im not a fan of full leather in hot hatches but the leather sides add a bit of class.  I dont like the wheels on the ed 30 really so didnt really see the point of going for one but clearly its a desirable
model.  I also wanted xenons but the only stock cars with them were fully loaded and 25k+ also.

So far am very impressed, i love the seats and the engine i am used to from the TT. Incidentally, i drove an S3 and was sooo disappointed.  It felt heavy, noisy, didnt make a good sound, rode to hard.  All in all it made my mind up to go for a GTi, paying 8k less than an S3 for performance that is very similar for most drivers.  I also like the understated cool looks of the GTi and it feels as well put together as my TT was.

Hopefully this is the start of a good long term relationship !!  Any one know if you can get some cool GTi mats anywhere by the way ?

Cheers all

Andy

Cannot help you with the mats, I'm sorry, but welcome to the Family that is golfgtiforum.co.uk!

So you say S3 does not sound as good as GTI? Interesting...
And you were disappointed with S3? Maybe you did not get a chance to push it in corners uphill on wet tarmac?
I myself never had a chance to testdrive an S3.
Ever got a chance to drive R32?

Hi

i didnt bother with the R32 although i was tempted.  most of the write ups suggested the GTi was a better balance, just about as quick and although i know the engine is great, i actually prefer the look of the Gti, its a bit more understated i think.

As for the S3, yep it was a major dissapointment.  I didnt really push it and i think thats the point.. the Gti i enjoyed driving at 60% and it just felt so much lighter on its feet.

At the end of the day, 30k is a hell of a lot for an A3 which ever way you look at it !!   I had already owned an A3 before and liked it but it is just too expensive.  I have always liked the mk 5 Gti so i didnt look at anything else when my TT had to go !

Welcome Andy

Hope you have more luck with the GTI and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

What was the TT like to drive in comparison with the GTI?
