Title: POTHOLE!!!
Post by: Mr Lees on 06 December 2007, 12:42
off to by mrs xmas pressie in bakewell, thought i would partake in the cat and fiddle on way home, 10 miles into journey, hit a monster pothole! tyre split, knackered alloy, and worst of all the nearest garage I could limp to only had Kumqat tyres.
Still drove the cat and fiddle in the fog, with the spare unicycle wheel on , the back through hardknott pass ( castleton)  still a cracking drive! limited to 50 mph but nevermind.
car going into VW as tyre sensor keeps coming on, but tyres ok, reckon its done something to the sensors ect, getting a claim form from the council, they can pay for the tyres and any repairs, apparrently cant refurb 18" due to finish ( according to Vw), new wheel then!.
went back with camera and took pics of the pothole
only had the car serviced on saturday!, ps touch up kits are only £5.15 from dealer little bottle of paint  + laquer , £7 on EBAY!

The pass up above Castleton is Winnats pass. Hardknotts pass is in the Lake District :nerd:. I agree though, it is a lovely drive.

Sorry to hear about the rim and rubber  You may need to have your alignment checked if you hit it that hard.

Unfortunate dude.  I don't know if it varies region by region (probably does) but up here in Aberdeen they won't entertain claims relating to potholes unless the pothole has been reported to the council.  They then have a certain timeframe to fix it.  If you damange your car within this timeframe they will not entertain you.

Lets hope someone reported this pothole a few days before you hit it!  Or your local cooncil has a more road user friendly approach.

I knew it was something pass , getting VW to check suspension, alignment ect friday, see what damage has been done. tyre lights not come back on yet so fingers crossed. to be honest if council wont fork out im not sure i will get the wheel done yet. Forked out £90 for the excasta ( ?) tyre already, and cant imagine VW will look at the car for free!

Car been into Haysledens Barnsley, checked all suspension, alignment ect no problems, only the scrape on the alloy .
The tyre monitor probably  came on as different tread on new tyre and slightly different Psi, not been on since.
wife dropped car off at mid-day, VW phoned at 3 pm car ready, been washed and vacced out , and there was no charge for looking at it ... free car wash

Nice one VW Barnsley!

just waiting for claim form from council

You want to try driving here in Ireland.... roads are really bad! Sory to hear bout yur boots too!

Think I read somewhere that the tire pressure system doesn’t physically measure the tire pressures but in fact measures the rotational speed of each wheel. If a tire starts to deflate then the rotational speed of the wheel changes and hey presto your darling GTi tells you your tire is going down. This is what may be happening when you put the motorbike wheel on the car!

Sorry to hear about the wheel, we are very lucky here in South Africa at the moment.

With the Soccer world Cup coming up in 2010 they have resurfaced all the mountain passes and really nice roads so everyone is smiling. NO MORE POTHOLES for us. We have also had our fair share of Rim damage and had a rim refurbed and they did a Great job.
