I've noticed a few people on here comment that the oe tyres (Dunlop sportmax?) on the GTi are sh!t.
Is this the only tyre they come with or is there a choice? Has anyone been able to ask for a different tyre to be supplied from new or have they just changed them off their own back once they got the car?

i think its just chance. mich piolet ps2's are what i recomend!!
-
I've got Conti's on mine in Dubai, probably because of the hot weather and different road surface there is a different compound and recommended manufacturer. Plenty of grip here though!
-
Mine came with the Michelin Pilot PS2 as well - must be luck of the draw
-
Conti sport 2's here. Been very happy with them.
-
Conti's again but the demo i drove had Bridgestones Potenzas on.
-
Yup, I have Conti's too...and no probs with them

Is it not a bit unusual for a car maker to fit so many different tyres, from what i've seen in the past they nearly always fit the same ones or at least from the same manufacturer.
Would it be fair to say then that the more recent cars are coming with Contis? or is it still a lottery?

VW use the following manufacturers tyres on Golf GTI's.
Continental.
Bridgestone.
Dunlop.
Michelin.
It's luck of the draw.
There is much forum debate on which is best or worst but a lot of is quoted on the basis of magazine tyre test results rather than personal experience.
Don't worry about the Dunlop's, they are a fine tyre and unless you are Gavan Kershaw or Sebastian Loeb then you really won't notice the subtle differences between respective brands.
Although I expect like everyone else on here (including me) you'll claim that due to your extraordinarily well honed driving skills that you need the ultimate everyday road tyre to extract maximum feel with minimal sidewall flex on your way to Asda.

They have ASDA's in NZ?

I have seen recent cars with all the fitments that people have listed.
They tend to mix the tyre makes, remember the Ford + Firestone problem in the US. So that they aren't all from one manufacturer.

No, but you wouldn't have understood if I'd have said 'PAK 'N' SAVE'
or
'Supervalue Plus'
or
'4 Square'

True

I have the Dunflops.. the difference between those an PS2's are very noticeable. Its only recently that they come into their own, with all the wet weather they handle remarkably well in the wet... diferent tyres are slightly better for different conditions. But come summer... i will be switching to the PS2's no doubt

I'd forgotten about that, suppose it does make a bit of sense.
I know the salesman i'm dealing with pretty well, he's already agreed to supply the car un-valeted, not even washed, basically the white sheets removed and nothing else, as i'm getting the car detailed by Polished Bliss and the less damaged the dealer inflicts by attacking it with a polisher and or a sponge the better, so i'll ask him if there is any way of requesting what tyres it comes with, i suspect there wont be but it cant hurt to ask the question.

Good choice, I've seen a lot of work Clark puts out and have been blown away with the quality. I've seen a new RS4 he done and the swirls and marks the dealer inflicted in a new car is unreal

Anyone tried the new Goodyear F1 Asymetrics yet? They seem to take a while to bed in from new according to last monthe EVO.
How many miles are you folks getting from a front set of tyres?

I'm running the Continental 2's which are fine for the road (if a little harsh) but rubbish on track and I've just rotated front to rear at 4200 miles, I expect 9000 miles from a set of 4.
A friend of mine runs the much maligned Dulop Sport Maxx and he will double my mileage with much the same style of driving and he likes them too.
A Conti 2 also costs $700 versus $245 for the Dunlops.
