Title: Accident Advice
Post by: Philpy on 02 December 2007, 19:35
On Thursay a local taxi went in the back of the golf when my missus was driving. The only damage is a smashed rear bumper.... Now Im a fairly resonable person and dont belive in screwing people over.
But he wants me to take the car to him and for his "Garage" that work on his cars to sort it. Now this I surpose is fairish but he seems to wanna get another bumper from a scrappy and spray it. Should I go along with it or should I make him pay me and then sort it myself? A new bumper from VW is £280 + Spraying.

He doesnt wanna go through insurance...

What would you guys do?

Tell him he does it your way or you go for a claim. That should sort him out!

get the TOTAL to replace your bumper in cash, including FITTING

or

get his insurance details and go thru his insurance .

I would get a quote from VW and get them to spray it and fit it. Send him the quote and if he doesn't like it insist on using his insurance. It's the only definite way to make you don't get ripped off. VW will let you know if there is any more damage than just the bumper.
The taxi driver may be completely genuine, but you have to be sure.

dont take it to his garage because if it is not a insurance claim and they dont do a very good job of repairing your car you dont realy have a leg to stand on because taxi driver only has to deny anything happened once your car is repaired and if vw do it i should have thought that their work was gauranteed and to be honest i dont think taxis get repaired at the best garages around they get repaired at the cheapest until something happens that is not their fault

Theres nothing to stop him saying "what accident" play this one carefully if you dont want to go down his route!
price up a bumper, allow 3hrs (£25 per hr) painting and fitting time, plus materials (£50), so you need off him around £125, plus the price of the bumper, plus vat..
If he settles for cash, you must still include the the vat, as youll still have to pay it, when you get it repaired
Also, I would never let anyone who repairs taxi bodywork, anywhere near my car!

Well we all know taxi drivers are A-holes and should all be made to drive speed/acceleration restricted vehicles.
Go via insurance mate, his fault, he pays for it and that way you are sure the job will get done properly and any extra damage will be fixed too! Don't worry about what the taxi driver/company wants, it's your car get it fixed the right way.

We'll Ive told him I want £380 or we go through insurance, he wont pay so says we'll go through insurance.... Might be a right off though, I mean £380 on a car which is worth £750?

If they right it off, buy it back, use the cash left over to buy a 2nd hand bumper and fit it yourself, its only 4 bolts holding it on

How difficult is buying a car back?
Title: Re: Accident Advice
Post by: Horney on 04 December 2007, 14:41
Pretty easy IF they let you.

They'll take the amount they'll pay you for the total loss (lets say £750),then deduct the amount they deem it to be worth in scrap (lets say £150) and then deduct your execess (lets say £250). This will leave you with your car and a cheque for £350.

The only downside is your car will be registered as a write off but to be honest with cars of this age if you have photographic evidence of the damage and repair most people won't give a monkey's when you sell it.

if wrote off just tell them you want the car back and you will get paid what they value car as minus scrap value as stated already and if they deduct your excess you can claim it back also you may have to have a vehicle id check done
on the bright side you could end up with a car and some free spending money

My car was written off after an accident, I think it was a Cat C write off- Uneconomical to repair, It may devalue the car as this gets registered on the log card, and any future buyer will need to know this. However, If the car is only worth £750 it's not too much of a problem.
There will also be a bit of running around for you to do after the car is repaired- vehicle I.D check etc.
It's worth it though, these are great cars.

let me know if you want any more details.

Ask the insurance to do a contract price repair, to save the car being "written off", ie, you agree a price that comes in under the amount, that would have written the car off, you find a second hand bumper, get it painted and fitted, job done...

I had a Mk2 written off. Panels dented, some mindless idiot. Obviously not my fault, it was parked, lost the excess...you always do unless you have xtra cover. Bought it back and just continued to drive it 'till I had time to mend it. Never any ministry intervention of any sort.

I had a situation like this. I didn't loose the no claims discount, but whilst the claim was underway it got put on hold.
So when it was time to renew I had to pay full price untill the claim was made against the other driver. My other party had no insurance tax or a license, this is generally why people want to do a deal . I wouldn't trust this deal. He could just back out anytime. My insurance took the driver to court and once they obtained some cash my no claims was reinstated.

I'm sorry but that is awful! Why would they even think of penalizing you, whether or not he was done for no tax/insurance/license!
