Title: Mechanical Fuel Pump Help!
Post by: falconer01 on 01 December 2007, 17:15
My mk 1 has been running fine until the other morning it wouldnt start,  Pinpointed the problem to no fuel getting to carb,  I have taken mechanical fuel pump of to inspect. Nothing visual looks up with it. If i operate the pumps lift it gives plenty of fuel. I have cleaned pump up & fitted back to engine along with new gasket & o ring. Again only trickle of fuel getting through.  Is there a fuel filter in tank etc i have missed. The in line filter seems ok. Also whats the round bowl fuel enters after leaving fuel pump.  the car was a gti until some fool fitted a carb. Im hoping to return it back to injection. Thanks

im not sure if this is relevant, but i had a similar problem with my metering head on my gti. it had blocked up and meant that fuel wasn't coming out.

we checked this by releasing one of the fuel lines to the metering head, turning ignition on, and hearin the pump prime, then fuel SHOULD come out of the metering head, this proved that fuel was going in, and when testing the other side of the metering head there was no pressure at all!

Good luck, and im sorry if that didnt help!

Thanks for your reply anyway,  Its a bit of a strange one as injection system was replaced with carb by previous owner.  Not 100% sure but engine only has mechanical pump . No noise when priming if you mean like a electric pump.  going to look for any more fuel filters in line. only other thing i can think of is the lift is not catching on the cam that operates pump. Or faulty fuel pump. Thanks for reply
