Title: Want some info on breaking a mk2
Post by: Ant on 30 November 2007, 16:00
I had a buyer lined up to take my old mk2 as they wanted some bits and then were going to break it.

However after repeated attempts to get some sort of timescale, I'm considering either trying to sell it for parts or breaking it myself (is currently taxed but not mot'd and would fail in current state).

My main concern with breaking it myself are, experience (not much) shipping extracting parts (esp engine) and getting rid of what is left (shell, I'm expecting to have to pay a scrappy to take as it's not worth as much to them as a car).

I'm on the Hampshire/Surrey border, so would also consider a deal for getting some help from someone more knowledgable and experienced.

Can anyone give me any pointers, tips, etc?

I'm cutting up the shell myself and then taking it down the tip/metal yard.

It is currently in 2 halves (front and back) and probably needs to be halved once more or maybe twice then it'll be in the back of my car!

1st off , a scrap merchant NOT a car scrap yard will take your old shell and pay you for it. scrap steel is about £100 per ton due to demand from the east ( china/ india, not Norfolk  )

If you have room strip and save the parts you could probably get all but the engine and running gear done in a day.

you might be lucky and sell the engine and gearbox in one depending on the miles. I'd leave it in the car so you can start it if someone wants to hear it.

for shipping , get some decent digital scales and look here for prices.

or if you're using ebay see what others charge.

What colour is it as I'm still after a bonnet and a passenger door for a 3dr Atlas Grey MKII.

Phone your local council.  They will either have a service for scrapped car removal or be able to recommend a company.  Near where I used to live (Chingford, London) there was a company called ELV LTD who would take scrapped, abandoned, written off, broken.. anything basically, even just a shell, for free!

End of the day they will get money out of it by weighing it in for metal.

when i tried to get rid of a rolling shell the council told me i would have to pay to get it taken away as most of the money is in the engine, i phoned some people out of the local paper who took scrap cars and a few of them said i would have to pay them and a few said they would give me 20quid for the shell, i eventually got someone to take the rolling shell and they gave me 30quid for it

Thanks for all the info, I'll have to give this some though, might be moving soon, and getting rid of the car would become a major issue.
