Hi guys,
Absolutley fed up with my 2005 plate 1.4 megane, its a heap of S*%$ from ignition coil problems, electrical issues, squeaky breaks etc and have decided on getting rid, and getting my self an older, cheaper car with a bit more performance. I have plumped for some for of Golf GTI, looking to spend between £3,000-£5,000
Looking locally at the moment and have spotted this.....

1.9GT TDI with 78,000 miles for £3,395 which seems a very cheap deal. My only gripe is it seems to have been modified quite a bit from original manufacturer spec
Aside from that there arnt to many of the diesel engines local to me but there are a lot of 2.0GTI 8v golfs around for pretty cheap with average mileage of between 50,000-80,000 miles pricing between 4-5k.
So far I know to check gearbox and clutch extensivley, and check for the dropping windows issue. Anything else I should look out for?
What are the typical lifespans for the 2.0v8 engine, is performace that much great than that of the 1.6?
So many questions :-)
Cheers,
Greg

looks cheap but does need de-chavving
what do you want for the megan?

Without wishing to offend any of the 2.0 GTI drivers on here.. avoid that model like the plague. They're slow, bad mpg and drink oil. 1.9 tdi or 1.8T 20v is what you want. You should be able to get something very reasonable within your budget.

hi mr blue,
you would be interested in the megane? id be looking for a price of 5,500k
and yes, that gold def needs de chaving!! wheels are ok but windows, wing mirrors and probably the aftermarket grill will be rubbish

If you go for the 1.8T I'm afraid you won't get away from the ignition coil issue! I think all modern cars pretty much suffer from the same raft of sensor related issues such as MAF and O2. Mechanicals are solid though....
-
to chav and looks like a ripspeed catalogue wouldnt go near it myself, get a 1.8t remap it and you wont be dissapointed!!
-
looking further afield there are a lot 1.9 gttdi 110/115 cars at good prices
since i am only young dont want to go higher than insurance group 10, for me this car seems best balance between performance and economy. any car i drive now is going to be better than my heavey 1.4 0-60 in 13.5 seconds car :-)
what you reckon?

im not sure what insurance group the gttdi's are but my 2.0gti is group 14 i think. but yeah anything is gonna better than your 1.4.
good luck with your search mate, put posts up if you find anything

1.8t is group 14...get some quotes before your rule it out. how old are you? how long u had your licence? you'd be suprised at how cheap you can insure one i think
-
1.8T was silly money for me to insure, so got the 2.0.
By all means get some quotes.

insured my 18t for 220 tpft and 340 fc im 27 not bad i thought
