Title: GTi Mk2 brakes...

I have a mk2 8v Digifant Gti 1991, and am looking to upgrade the brakes withiut spending a small fortune, (say max£100-£200)

What can i do and can i get bigger discs? if so what?
ie drilled, x drilled, grooved or x drilled and groved? and what pads?

Money will probably be best spent by trying to get hold of some 16v complete front hubs and 22mm master cylinder so you can upgrade from the standard 239mm to the 256mm and then possibly to 280mm in the future if you need it

As for discs i cant remember which type it is but one type of disc is prone to cracking, i dont want to guess at it but im sure someone could tell you for definate shortly

plain discs are fine and cheaper! the pads make the biggest difference imo. 280mm + ferodo ds2500's are awesome but do squeak a bit

16v conversion best way to go....but only really worth getting bigger discs&pads etc if ur heading for some track action....

I heard that Polo GTi calipers fit straight to the 8v hubs?
Same with mk4 golf calipers
Is this true?

Now youve said it i think it is the drilled that are prone to it, it would certainly make sence

I dont know what bolts up straight to the 8v hubs but with the 8v hubs as they are one piece it limits you with disc size hence the upgrade to 16v hubs as they are 2 piece

You can fit mk4 golf calipers to the rear but you need conversion hoses as the brake pipes are different compared to the mk2

The previous owner of my 16v fitted grooved brembos.  I wouldn't reccommend them - they are very noisy under heavy braking. I'll be going OEM next time round with uprated pads.
