Swapped the wiper arms for new ones a few weeks back. Driver's side been unreliable ever since and now not moving. Nut turns with a spanner on it but will will neither tighten nor loosen, which of course means I can't get it off.
Oh, and it's raining.
What do I do boys?
Thanks.

TIP #1...don't make the same mistake I did and shear the shaft 10mins before needing to travel 250miles in pouring rain
TIP #2...just shear the shaft, remove the two big 22mm nuts, drop the whole mech out, then pop the balljoint and the circlip retaining the shaft, and just replace it with a new one.

I had this, the reason is there are 2 shaft sizes on MK2s, the early shaft is smaller than the late one. fit a late arm on an early shaft and you shear the stud and/or bugger up the threads like you just have! The shaft size changed around 89ish, my 89 wiper arms wouldnt fit on my 90 spec GTI.

That's what I've done then. Thanks.
I'll get some later shafts from GFS or similar and swap em over.

is there any difference in the rear wiper arms?
-
nope afaik rears are the same.
-
they are different! found out this weekend when replacing mine, my e reg has a smaller spline than the later golfs at the breakers
-
odd, my 89 with the small spline front wipers had the same sized spline at the back to my 90 gti!
-
well at least you can get your wiper to work had car for four weeks now and still not had wiper working i think the wiper stalk is broken cos if i push it backwards only the screen wash work :embarassed:
-
have you checked the wires going through the tailgate, top left. they have a habit of breaking behind the grommet?

One sawn-off nut and a set of correct early Mk2 wiper arms from the scrappy later and we're back in business. Thank God for dads with hacksaws and big umbrellas....
-
Glad to hear it bud. I take it you took it for a good blast about afterwards?

Yes mate! Out for ages on a nice quiet route and had some fun trundling down the lanes behind a modded Mister Two.
-
Nice one, what's a Mister Two?
