Gtx magnatec 5w/40 is the best IMO. You can use 10w/40 tho if you want. Use a genuine oil filter as thay are cheaper then aftermarket ones and what could be better than using genuine parts!!   Get a sump plug from vw aswell £1

Is 5w/10 better than 10w/40? And would you reccomend this for 2.0GTi? Got it serviced today and my uncle put 10w/30 in it but im thinking of topping up with 5w/40 or 10w/40 whenthis runs out

I think I mentioned this in another thread yesterday, I have been told that the 5w stuff is slightly better (no idea how it works or why its better).

10w stuff does the job too and I wouldnt bother with changing the oil just to get rid of the 10w stuff.

Can anyone confirm if mixing oils is a good idea or not?

I don't think mixing different types of oils is a good idea, OK i guess if it gets you off the hard shoulder but ideally you should only have the one grade of oil sloshing around in there.  Don't think it matters too much if its the same grade but a different brand.

I think its been mentioned earlier but on higher milage engines its not a great idea to switch from a 'thicker' (ie 10w-40) to a thinner oil as older engines are a bit 'looser'.  If you've been running the thinner oils for a while its OK though.  In any case it doesn't do any harm as such its just you might find you are burning oil which you werent doing with the thicker stuff.

5w is thinner that 10w this is why its best to user 10w on dizsnizles, or higher milage, 5w is good i use 0w Castrol RS its a super fine oil that gets in everywhere but does at times burn abit as it passes through the rings a little easyer, 10w is slightly thicker as mentiond with the looser engines and thinner oils it can burn off through the rings the other part of the 5w- is the hot spot or optimum temp if you have a hot running engine you want a higher number but most cars are aroung the 40 mark hence 10w-40, if you run your golf with the 85 temp sensor that keeps the temp down id id advise you to look in to maybe using somthing like a 5w-35 maybe im blowing out my ares but this is going from memory working for vauxhall, all in all magnatex is a great oil what ever one suits your engine better, i use RS as its even better and what was used in her before i bought it, if you can help it down mix oils... magnatex will work after about 3 changes to get rid of the old other type

shut up GSN for got sake.....

Good posts gsn and ub7rm think i understand oil a bit better....just one last thing. Ive got 98k on my motor my uncle put 10w-30 semi in, ill stick with 10w-30 as it seems its better for cars with a higher mileage but woul it be bad to put fully synthetic in to top it up once its burned down a bit?

Its not going to be that detramentle its just not best practice to mix oils, they both have different additives and propertys, just for good house keeping on your car stick to the same oil if you can afford it dude. you are more than welcome bad lad, u just need to learn to spell and punctuate. haha.
