Went to cure my lack of reversing lights and seems I dont have a standard g/box fitted.
Found the plug for the reverse lights disconnected, and WHY it was disconnected
The sensor on my g/box is a lot bigger than the plug, still oblong, but has 4 pins, 3 in a line front to back and then on inside it .
the whole sensor and gubbins is bolted onto the g/box by 2 bolts
Will try and get piccies tomorrow, but has anyone got any ideas, what the fook I have fitted.
Thanks in advance

Does it look like the connector would be something like this:

I know the pic is crap but i'm not going outside in the dark and cold!
Anyway, if it is then it may be an early gearbox with the sensor for the economy shift light.
-
you need to get the correct switch for your car then! GSF tried to sell me one with a different plug to what was on my car so i made them get various types for an 020 box until i found the right one for my plug.
-
i have a smiliar prob..... i bought another gearbox on ebay as mine was crunching. it has that long type female plug on it. my car however has a small round type of reverse light plug which slots into an entirely differant location. i swopped the old plug in the location on the new box and my reverse lights still dont work! :embarassed:
i just figured it was an old spec box (87) with my newer (j 91) mk2 so i will live without reverse lights as i now have no crunching between 2nd gear changes!
you dont need reverse lights for MOT so
-
Yes you do need reverse lights for an MOT if fitted. It's possibel to bodge it however. Just find the pins that act as the switch when reverse is engaged and use some small crimp connectors to wire in the original lead.

sounds like you have an earlier gearbox fitted to your car, unfortunaly the early and late sensors are not swappable as the location they screw into is totally different! All is not lost however, check out brokes site: http://www.brokevw.com
Click 'Reverse Switch Wiring' this will show you how to wire up an old skool reverse switch to the 2 wires you have :)
Edit: And NO reverse lights are NOT a terstible item, even if they are fitted. Have a look here, if you can find a bit that mentions the reverse lights I'll eat my hat ;)
http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/mc_contents.htm
The only reason reverse lights were fitted is so you can see behind you at night when reversing! They also happen to help other motorists see that you're reversing too ;)

Cheers Chap. top info and site links, Coffee's on me when we meet.
Also, will the older gearbox have any adverse effect ????
-
KOOL cheers jonny!
ill have a bash at fixing my reverse light at the weekend! even though i dont really need to! HAHA
-
only adverse effects from an old gearbox would be:
1) its f**ked
2) gear ratios are pants
3) reverse light switch is wrong type for your wiring loom :)
-
a comment earlier about reversing lights not being part of the mot.....
somene said they are...
I didnt think they were when mine was done recently i noticed they werent working 30mins before the MOT!! I fixed them only to be told i didnt need them but i did need the fog which also wasnt working.....so the bloody car failed on that only!!!!
-
As far as I am aware the reverse lights have to work if fitted. If you don't have any it won't fail but if you do it will. I found this out when I had my old mini as I put 60's lights on the rear which did not have a reverse light built in when the original lamps on the car did. I thought I would have to fit a reverse lamp but the tester said that if the car doesn't have any he can't test them and reverse lights aren't a legal requirement.

well mine were clearly fitted and not tested!!!!!!! i watched the guy dot he test and questioned him after....
quick search of google....
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/motl.htm
Are reversing lights part of the MOT test?
The testing manual makes no reference to reversing lights and are not testable items as such, however you *could* be issued with a failure if they were illuminated all the time.
so if the internet is right they are not testable but if illuminated permanently you will fail.....
-
nope completly not any part of the MOT, as I said earlier check the MOT testers manual, it aint in there. The tester that failed your car was clearly a muppet who didnt know the rules ;)
-
well as my rear lights are smoked you cant tell that reverse lights are there
Jumped the connector yesterday and they do work, so just need to get some connectors and do the mod on the link RubJ's posted
-
only adverse effects from an old gearbox would be:
1) its f**ked  erm, its a recon box :undecided:
2) gear ratios are pants erm, how would i tell ????
-
1) I meant 'if its f**ked' ;)
2) well does it feel nippy, or slow?
-
well to me its nippy, even after my fireblade
but i do drive 2 corsa, both semi autos :embarassed: :lipsrsealed:
-
tis all good then, ratio choice mostly come down to driver preference anyway, unless its really badly missmatched like fitting a diesel box on a 1.6 carby
-
Im an MOT TESTER!
-
and the answer is ??????
-
only adverse effects from my old gearbox is the reverse light switch is wrong for the loom! apart from that its perfect! ratios seem the same as my original box which was crunchier than a caburys crunchy!
-
the answer is they arnt required, as they arnt a testible item. any mot man who tells you different is talkin rollocks frankly :)
If they did winge about it, ask em to dig out their manual and point out where it says so :)
-
can someone with the correct gearbox fitted to a 1990/1991 16v let me know what revs you are at at 70 and 80 in 5th. ( closed road of course )
Thanks
-
according to gvk's ratio calculator:
http://www.aufg48.dsl.pipex.com/speed-ratio.html
At 70mph with 195/50/15 tires you'll be at 3465rpm, and at 80 3960rpm.
-
 cheers very muchly, give or take the odd few RPM, that is spot on what i got yesterday
70 was 3500. 80 was 4k near as damn it
cheers, happy now
