Title: Steering wheel
Post by: Eddie on 26 November 2007, 19:07
Hello,
I'm removing the MOMO steering wheel that came with the car when i bought it and fitting an original steering wheel to my 1990 mk.2 G.T.I 16v with PAS.
I've seen a few original steering wheels advertised that say they are for Mk.2 golfs but not sure which one to buy.
I would include pictures but can't figure out how to drag them to this page.sorry. Tried the insert image button, still not a clue. anyway,

One of the wheels has straight and vertical spokes/hand grips on the bottom of the wheel,
The other one has angled grips at the bottom of the wheel.

They are both VW ones, any help would be welcome,
Also how do you add photos to this page? I'm a right computer novice.

Cheers.

Cheers for all the info guys,
I was just wondering if your cars have PAS or not. Maybe there is a connection with which wheel is fitted.
If you could let me know that would be great.

Also i have read a few other posts which mention small and large splines for the wheel attachment. Can anyone shed and more light on this.

Joe, I'll attempt to post a phot of my MOMO wheel for you.

Cheers fellers.

the spline size changed at some point around '88-ish, yours will be a large one. yeah pm me a pic of the momo or something and we could some to some arrangement.... ;) but failing that you can have my spare one for £5+postage or if you want to trade i have a leather version as well...

my dash only has one connector and no oil LED in the middle of the oil dial (just sumthing ive noticed from Dash to Dash)

also i took it off to fit a new wheel that i bought only to find that it the wrong size.... i have a large fitment and the wheel i bought is the small fitment, wayne kerr

You can easily remove the larger spline, using a bearing splitter and pullers. Mine is a 1990 8v, which used to have a large spline, but I pulled it off as I wanted to put a Mk1 GTi steering wheel on - can see the dials now. Couldn't with the Mk2 one on - how daft is that!!

interesting, didnt know that, might just do that, although did you not need to source a smaller spline?......
i spent £50 of a wheel that lies in my boot

No need for a smaller spline as its there already! VW placed the larger spline over the top.

I assume it was in preparation for the Mk3, which ws just around the corner.

As above, pas ones had straight spokes, non pas had roundy ones.  the non-pas wheel is also slightly wider to help with leverage due to the heavy steering!  If yours dont match up then its been replaced at some point ;)

This only applies to the later cars, the early wheels were different designs.  The really early ones had the old skool MK1 wheel with the 4 horn buttons on for example :)

He's the old skool wheel, that I currently use!

Nicer than the Mk2

It's not better, taste is subjective you can't say that.

But I agree

nah leather bound straight spoke wheel is nicer imo, but the 4 button wheel is best in a MK1 or old skool MK2.  Of course only if we're talking std wheels, I think my mountney 3 spoker is nicest for a MK2, and old skool mountney 4 spoker is best for an old skool MK1 ;)

for me... momo corse is the perfect period aftermarket wheel on a mk2, my passat has a leather bound straight spoke wheel so in a way i have it all! mind you meant to be picking up a momo race for the passat at the weekend so i guess i'll have a choice!
