HI
thanks in advance for any reply's
i have a golf mk2 1.8 gti. i really don't know where to begin. ok here goes
the problem is that when i start the car it always misses the first start, then starts on the second time, and when i start it up finally the engine idles at first fine then eventually looses it and turns off. It stays on if i rev it on high revs, but when the rev comes back down again the car sputters and turns off. When i am driving the car is fine but when i start to slow down the engine turns off. Also turns off if i touch the accelerator lightly, but runs fin on high revs.
i changed the following
temp sensors-blue and black
spark plugs
what shall i do... it is in no fit state to drive and no mechanic will come out to look at it, i live in oxford, looks like i gotta figga it out-with your help, thanx

Sound slike it just needs the idle and timing adjusted. Get yourself to a decent VW specialist and they'll sort you out.
Before you do also check for any vacumm pipes that may be cracked or leaking.

thanks for the reply nick. :nerd:
can anyone show me a diagram on where the vacum tubing is? i got the haynes manual but there not that specific. Also how to i change the idle and timing? :embarassed:
-
Also check the rocker cover breather (looks like a flying saucer) is held in place into the top of the rocker cover, if it's loose it will be causing a vacuum leak.
-
There is a setup guide for the idle and timing in the mk2 maintenance section
Vac pipes you just need to check all the pipes from the throttle body, will be worth checking the servo pipe as well just to make sure thats not split

Sounds like a hole in a vacumn pipe to me, i had a similar problem when i had a hole in the breather pipe from the top of the crank case.
Have a feel around and see if you can find any holes

thanks for the replys.
has any one got pictures of where the vaccum hoses are
i know they are behind the inlet maifold but a step by step picture guide would be nice-if there is one?

One thing with my golf same as yours but 1991 version, when you pull the dipstick out it stops, maybe check that?

Idle valve needs a clean?
