Not looking to get one just yet because i can't afford the insurace to be honest. But does anyone have one, would they recomend this engine, i suppose the figures speak for them self, over 50mpg and about 135MPH... stunning in theory.
Iv'e read somewhere that it has slightly too much torqure for its traction control system is this an issue people have problems with?
And also has anyone "chipped" remapped the ECU in one of these cars, how much extra BHP can you reallistically squeeze out, and i don't know if this is a silly question but what sort of MPG would you get if you did remap the ECU...
Just by looking at the figures, im saving up to get one of these, the current 1.4 is somewhat of a slow coach...
Cheers,

ask Ridge as he has one; I've got the 130 and can't fault it at all; going to have it remapped next year which should see figures of around 170-180bhp
the 150 will remap to around 185-195bhp
only problem is unless you're looking at a new clutch if you abuse the power

the TDI 150 engine is a beast and i'd say the best out of the MK4 TDI's
i average 53-55 mpg from a tank and have touched 135 (verified by gps) a few times
the only time the torque can become an issue is in the wet as you can get wheel spin in 3rd, i'm currently running pirellis which aren't the best but cope with the torque fine in the dry
i plan to get mine remapped at some point but to be honest there isn't much need to, in terms of in gear acceleration standard you can keep up with a MK5 GTI, celica T sports, type r's
like Rhyso says if you do plan to remap it, you'll want to consider a new clutch, on the plus side the 150 comes with the front mounted intercooler so you can happily change the turbo without having to upgrade the exhaust systems
except upto 195 bhp from a remap and 260 bhp with a bigger turbo too
regarding economy after the remap, on a cruise it will be higher, but under acceleration it would be worst

Reason i mentioned it is because the other day i drove a 02' Passat TDI 130, and it felt like a rocket even though its a big heavy car, so i though the golf is no doubt lighter and with even more power it must be an amazing piece of kit, and looking at the figures its stunning.
Guess the guestion is then why get a GTI which will only average about 30mpg but would be slower?
With this you get the looks and spec of a GTI but that all important economy aswell, win win situation...

the only reason(s) IMO to get a petrol GTI is for to cheaper initial cost or if you plan to tune to silly levels like 400 bhp

What're the prices like on the GT TDI 150s? I'd of loved one but couldn't find one in my price range.

you're looking at £7k + for decent mileage and spec
obviously you can get them cheaper depending on condition
-
I have one its great
Im just desperate to upgrade to the Gt tdi 150 anniversary but i can't find a nice one
Yeah 7k + seems about right thats what i have been offerd for mine to be traded in

personally i wouldn't say that the anniversary was an upgrade, the only thing better you get is the brakes and suspension then rest is cosmetic.
don't get me wrong i'd love an anniversary TDI, but you get much more car for you money with a non anniversary as there was only ever 1 or 2 options on the anni being parking sensors and cruise
if you look at what you'll get for the same money as an anniversary TDI then you'll have everything from leather to xenons and spare money to upgrade the brakes / suspension

Cheers for the info, i think definatley thats the next car on my shopping list, might have to wait a couple of years for the NCB, but thats the future lads.....
GT-TDI 150, then uprate turbo and chip to get 260BHP and remain at about 50MPG, Thats unreall...

I feel I need to mention the Fabia Vrs, VAG running gear, good level of trim & build, sporty to drive, cheap ins, prices are good even for low milage cars.
Had mine mapped to approx 170/285lbs.......animal!! & lots of transmition shutter due to hugh torque. Had it reduced to about 160/275 which feels alot better now, still very quick & good on fuel too

Are there many common problems with the MK4 GT TDI 150? Just wondering because I may end up getting one next year.
-
only the same as most MKIV's; biggest problem the 150's have is premature CAM wear due to muppets using incorrect oil
apart from that its all gravy
-
the cam wear problem happens even without the wrong oil being used i know of 3-4 cars from around my way all varyed in mileage .my theory is either a oil feed problem or dodgy followers.
ours got done at 100300 miles and it had a fvwsh i checked it 30000 later and all fine
my mate has done 10000 miles since it got done and he checked it and says there is some wear all ready and he is using the correct pd oil every 5000 miles.
anyway the ones i have seen wearing only wear on 1 lobe of the cam not the full cam and it only affected 1 of my followers, my mates was the same except his was on the opposite side from mine
-
I suppose there's no obvious way of checking for cam wear is there? So say I went to view a MK4 GT TDI 150 to buy then how would I check that all is well?
I'd heard of the problem with the car and it does worry me that I might end up buying one with cam wear and a big bill a few months down the line to sort it out.

When I had my GTTDI 130 I thought about upgrading to the 150 and took one out for a test drive. The turbo seemed to spool up later in the rev range which resulted in a bigger shove in the back, but the drawback being a slower reaction to the throttle. I ended up sticking with the 130 and remapping instead.
