hi
this is my 1981 mk1 gti 1.6 that I bought in the summer.

does anybody know what kind of arches they are?
its got a vinyl roof. was that ever an option when it was bought?
the problem is that it has a huge puddle under the drivers seat and in the drivers footwell.
where could that water come from? could it be the door seal?
another problem is that it leeks a tiny bit of oil. could that be the rocker cover gasket? i saw that there was some oil running down the back of the block. or could it be something else?
cheers
seb

Try checking the drain holes on either side of the scuttle panel under the windscreen. They get clogged with leaves and stuff and the water builds up and finds a way in. Thanks to some channels in the floorpan, the water can also run in under the carpets and can gather in the rear of the car as well, leaving the front dry and the back carpets soaking.
There's been numerous posts on the forum about the strange places water gets in, and this seems to be the most common.
As for oil, I leave that to the experts. I know nothing about the options list of early Golfs but in the heady days of the early eighties I would imagine a lot of cars had a nice vinyl toupee slapped on them. My mum had a Mk1 Fiesta with one ffs!

i think that is part of the zender kit you have there...
but don't quote me on that!

I will have look at the drain holes tomorrow.
It seems like the water is running down the by the A pillar along the door seal.
I have also discoverd some water in the boot now. some sits right by the bootlid seal. is worth getting new seals. if yes, where can I get them from (couldnt find any on gsf)
anybody got an idea where the oil could be coming from?
is there a bumper to go with zender kit?

cheers for the link! some cool bodykits there
I think I have discovered the leak. Its by the A pillar, where the gutter comes down. that is rusted through and I think the water is coming through there. that would explain why there is such a big puddle under the drivers seat, because of all the water thats running down that gutter.
I know its common for a mk1 to rust trough there, but is it common to leak there too because of the rust?
Im just gone get some pics now.

the cars are bound to be rusty in places...
just remember if you fix it right now it will last for years!
prevention is better than the cure or something!?!?!?
reminds me.. i must get cab fixed.. haha!
-
Well, I guess I will have to weld it up then, if my mate lends me his welder
I really dont look forward to taking the windscreen out to do that.
this afternoon i sat in the car with my torch when it was raining and discoverd that the offside rear light is cracked, because its dripping in there like hell. other then that I also have to seal the heater because water is coming in there too!
also i have just ordered a new rocker cover gasket to get rid of the oil problem.
and after Christmas i will do the clutch cause its slipping at 4000rpm.
and just remembered that i have to get a speedo cable too
aaah, so much to do, so little time!!!
but the good thing is that my housemate said that he will pay for the MOT if it gets through :undecided:!?

the list never gets shorter.. you either find new things to fix, break something while fixing something else, or do things that are totally pointless!!
-
finally i had some time to do something on the mk1.
So it was time to scrape the sound deadening out.and that what it looked like:
next thing was to go over it with the wire brush:
now it was all shiny and smooth.
then I put on a coat of red oxide so it doesnt rust away until i get back in February and then I will paint it properly. I have not got any pics of that because it was dark when I did it and I had to use the torch so I could see where to paint
this all the suff I got out on only one side:
will weigh that stuff after I got the other side done.
on friday i will continue with the other side and also I will have a go at welding up some rust

been busy again this morning, because yesterday the subframe for the seat arrived from germany (only cost 52 euros deliverd and is brand new).
last night I tried to mount the seat onto the subframe, but the subframe is about 3cm wider then the seat on each side.
therefor i had this brilliant idea of cutting up a wierd subframe that I got with the seat.
so i cut this up and now I have got 2 plates with holes in them.
the plates have got the holes to mount the seat on, but I need to drill another 2 in each plate to mount the plate onto the subframe.
hopefully i will get that done when I go to uni later on.
ps: the neighbor asent happy when I was cutting up the old frame with the angelgrinder at 10 this morning.
-
Got the holes drilled into the plates by a very nice guy guy at uni.
so when I got home I put the plates on the seat and then mounted the plates onto the subframe and tada! it fits perfectly (measure twice, drill once).
then I went to get the plastic bits off the old seats and nearly stabbed myself trying to get them off, the result: I broke one
ok i took another one off the passenger seat and tried get it into the car.
absolute nightmare, i managed to get one plastic thing in but the other one didnt go in. ok so i took the frame out and tried again, just to break the plastic thing which already went in, but the other one went in now.
does anybody have a trick for sliding the subframe in with the plastic bits on? :undecided:
i tried my best cleaning the rails and put some copper grease on.
