Title: Any ideas people
Post by: 16v Matt on 16 March 2004, 19:23
ok, got a 92 GTI16v with 119k on the clock, if i start it from hot,say 15 - 20 mins after driving I get a cloud of blue smoke. If I start it from cold there is nothing from the exhaust, also during normal driving there is nothing. Could it be the valve stem seals?? These were done in 2002. The car has been sat in a garage not really doing much for the last 12 months. Sorry it goes on a bit!! very gratefull for any thoughts. ???

Hi, I use Synta Silva 10w-40. If it was the piston rings i thought it would smoke during normal driving? I'm no mechanic though!! :-\

synta silva is ok 10w/40 should be fine, could be oil in the cylinders that when it is running you dont see the smoke cos it ois 'diluted' but when you start it it smokes? ??? i dounno im guessing really!
sorry

Hi Gambit, 15/40? I'll give it a go. What do you reckon is causing it to do that?
Title: Re:Any ideas people

get somebody to rev it on & off hard while you look at the back to see if it blows blue smoke

are the plugs soaked in oil also? try changing the rocker cover gasket, pretty inexpensive & easy enough to to do

Get a compression test done. It should only cost a few ?'s and then you will know. Sounds like the piston rings are worn - changing the oil won't help.

Cheers everyone, got a few things to consider there. Can i just have new piston rings fitted or do i need to get the bores done to? :'(
Title: Re:Any ideas people
Post by: tallchap on 17 March 2004, 13:17
You might get away with new rings, but I suggest with your mileage, you might have to have the block re-bored and have new pistons/rings.

Ok, thats not quite what I wanted to hear! But thanks for the input all the same, next question! I asume we're talking BIG money for a job like that? ???

Have a ring around your local engine recon chaps. Some of them will do exchange and some will refurb your unit. Might be cheaper to buy a second hand engine from a breaker or off the forum. Cost depends on how much you are able/willing to do your self.... You will save yourself tons of cash if you were to take the engine out and replace it yourself. Just get a pro to do the recon on the motor.

If it is only a bit of smoke every now and then, it doesn't sound too bad and the engine will last for a while yet, but the problem will get worse (i.e. more smoke, etc) until one day it will give up.

if it does turn out to be the rings then you may aswell try and source a good 2.0 16v block (9a) from:-

Corrado 2.0 16v
Passat GT's
Seat Toledo GTi's

this block is a straight swap with the 1.8 block, your existing head, gearbox & all ancillaries just bolt on & is uses the existing mounts in your mk2

this will give you more bhp - ur talking about 150bhp straight off, then if setup correctly you can get about 165bhp

Thanks again. ;D

You lot have just about written his engine off because of a bit of smoke!  I've followed this car and it only ever smokes occasionally when it starts and once when it was driven hard I saw smoke.

What about valve stem seals? Or breather problems?

This isn't a car that smokes when it's running all the time.

In your original post you said the car hasn't been used much recently. That could easily be the problem. Its an engine that getting back in touch with life.

It could be the oil breather (i think thats what its called) is a little blocked. You may just want to dump its current oil and change the oil filter to start with. Changing the block isn't what i'd do as a first line of enquiry.

If it was something more serious then opt for a .25mm rebore with new piston heads.

I would not touch a recon to save my life. Its a bit like trading in the girlfriend for a different one - You Dont Know Where Its Been and Who Shagged It.

Hi Tinman, Yeah i've only owned the car for about 3 weeks, but i know it was used very infrequently for at least 12 months. I changed the oil & filter last weekend & used synta silva 10w/40. I'll check the breather system this weekend, any ideas what i should be looking for??

It sounds like valve stem oil seals to me.

But I would be very surprised if it is not throwing out oil when starting up from cold.

Get a compression test doen or take it to a good VW specialist garage that is trust worthy.

Regards.

Dean.

Cheers for the input dean, it maybe chucking oil out from cold it might just be not so visable. When it is hot i can actually see it in the mirrors. But first thing in the morning or after its been stood a while i don't see it.  :-[

I agree with Dean, valve stem oil seals. When the engine is not running, the oil in the head above the valves leaks past the seals and enters the cylinder or sits behind the closed valves and when you start the engine this oil is burned and shows as smoke. I would not worry about a small puff of smoke on startup, (a little upper cylinder lube wont do any harm ;)). Don't forget that this is a 16v engine, so double the stem seals as a 8v and they are a know weak point on that engine.
Steve.

So after it has been stood a while the oil will all drain back t the sump, so no smoke or less anyway?? Thanks for the advice Steve ;)
Title: Re:Any ideas people
Post by: mk1 on 18 March 2004, 20:13
Ah, no. The seals are leaking a small amount of oil down the valve guides that would have normally been held back. When the engine isn't running the oil drains down into the sump, some oil is held around the cam and valves so the are not "dry" when the engine is started. It is a small amount of this oil that seeps past the stem seals and causes the smoke.
Hpoe this helps,
Steve.

Thanks again people.
