My oil was nearly bone dry so i pulled into the BP & the dash said 'STOP' & the oil light came on, so i went to the car shop across the road & bought 2ltr of oil, but it's not at the minimum. I went to Halfords but they were charging £30+.
Does the car tell you when you need oil or just when you've got none as it must of been dry for some time now?
How much would an oil change cost?
Cheers.

Consider yourself lucky if it only costs you £30! That could have been serious dude......... don't drive it unless the oil level is AT LEAST on the minimum, you could be doing serious damage otherwise.
For an oil/filter change you're probably looking at about £40-£50 from a kwick fit  type of place. As for what type of oil - 10w40 as a minimum and better if you can afford it. The vw approved stuff is sold from the dealers and I cant remember how much it is but its not that bad cost wise.
What engine do you have? I know the 2.0's are notorious for drinking the oil. In my 1.8t the oil barely changes in level between services. I think you should maybe get her booked in for a full service to make sure the other levels / filters are OK

Hey,
Yup, a 2.0. It recently had a serviced so i hadn't checked the oil, i've only owned if for about a month. I might aswell get a new oil change then, instead of paying £30+ to fill the rest of the oil up.
Will the car tell you if you're low on oil then or does it only tell you when it's bone dry like mine?
-
If i were you check your oil every 2 weeks depends how many miles you do tho. But NEVER wait for the light to come on the dash coz your engine aint gonna last 5 mins. Never let it get below the min.
-
Well, it is below the min.
-
Dont drive it then
-
I'm going to drive it to get the oil changed, that's about it. I stuck 2ltrs in earlier.
-
I see. Once you have it changed keep i close eye on it...
-
I sure will now, i was reading about them being bad for oil a few days ago aswell!
I would of thought the oil light woulda warned me tho.

Yeah the 2.0 seem to use a lot, its funny because ive only ever topped up my 1.8T once between oil changes!! (In three years!!! tho i do change my oil every 6000 )
-
That's pretty. Why does the 2.0 use so much then? I bet it's worse on petrol aswell.
-
I honestly dont know, I would have thought the 1.8T would be worse being a high performance engine  Yeah i think the 2.0 is a little worse on fuel
-
I think i need to start driving a bit more sensibly then, just posted in the other thread for some tips on better MPG, hopefully i can stick to it..
-
Yeah easier said than done i try every day just doesnt work
-
I'd be the same with a 1.8t. ;)
