Title: Intermittent cutting out on 90bhp TDi
Post by: Bristol Boy on 24 November 2007, 13:10
My Golf TDi has recently taken to cutting out.  Only three times so far.  Always at slow speed - engine just dies.  On the first occasion, it fired up again at the first turn of the key. Then it was fine for a week.  Then along came occasions 2 and 3, only a day or so apart. On each of these occasions, it took 3 or 4 attempts before it would start.  I'm thinking it was the time delay, rather than the 3 or 4 attempts, that allowed the problem to rectify itself.  The engine management light hasn't come on on any occasion.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm paranoid about using the car in case these occasions are going to become more frequent, and in case the problem becomes terminal - probably during the rush hour at the busiest junction in town!!

Your problem sounds like the infamous Relay 109, i had exactly the same symptoms as you and buying the new relay cured it.
it will cost you about £15 from your local dealer, just undo the panel under the steering wheel and change the relay.
it you get stuck let me know.

Thanks, you're a hero.  A quick search on "109" in this and other forums seems to confirm your diagnosis.  I'll toddle off to the stealers tomorrow ..........
