Title: Gearbox help
Post by: panzer on 16 March 2004, 12:59
Can anyone tell me what types of gearbox you can install on a 1990 8v gti digi? Does it have to be an exact code match for the original or can it have a slightly different code. Do all 020 boxes fit or are there only a certain few that will fit?

+ Where exactly is the gearbox code marked?

Any help would be much appreciated as i am trying to source a gearbox at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

No it doesn't have to be the exact code, but there are some differences to look out for. You have quite a range of suitable donors from mk2 Golf's to mk1 Golf's, Scirocco's etc.

Things to look for will be: reversing light switch, there are various types. Most switches are a 2 pin connector and the switch is removeable.......but there is also the type that is built into the gearbox and has special plug.

16v and 8v gearboxes are different, I think you'll find the input spline on the 16v box is larger. You can still use a 16v box but you will need to swap for a 16v clutch too.

If you get your gearbox from a mk1 or scirocco then you'll find the driveshaft flanges are smaller........not a problem as you can swap them over.

Another donor option is to look at Maestro's and Montego's.......they use the same box, but again you will need to swap the flanges over.

Gearbox code is underneath, you'll see a flatted off section on the clutch housing.

If you find one and aren't sure, let me know the part number/code and I'll soon be able to tell you as I can use my ETKA to check interchangeability.

Look out ! are the ratios the same - you could end up with a slower 8v :o

Wow! what a great response from you guys.

All the info very useful.

The gearbox i am looking at has the following code: 020 301 103 AR. Its a 5 speeder. It looks very similar and has the correct reverse plug etc. But will this gearbox give me less power/range :)? I did phone up a vw garage to ask but they didn't help much, very vague.

Once again thanks for the info!

I've looked into this for you and I suspect that the part number you are quoting there is for the transmission case, not the gearbox itself. Thats what my ETKA says anyway.

To give you an idea for what you are looking for, have a look at this:-

If we now take 020 AUG for an example, I can now cross refer that to other models via my ETKA:-

Found it, the part number you have quoted is indeed for the transmission case:-

I have reduced it a tad as I realised it was too big............does it need reducing a little more. Just for my own future reference what would be the max pixel size that you would recommend? That one is now 1000x800

Blimey, just tried it at 800x600 and I see what you mean. Maybe its time for a poll to see what most people here are running at. At least then we ensure that pictures etc are correct for the majority.
