hi ppl, just a quick one, my w reg 2.0litre gti, is oh so very poor on fuel, it runs and drives great and have been driving it as normal the past week, now ive past the new car thing of giving it a bit.
Put £20 in last week and its only done 70 miles!,jesus my old 4x4 used to the same :(
i know its a 2.0litre engine, but thought about 100 miles to £20 would be at the very least i would be getting, i am wishing i did go the extra bit and get a gt tdi now :(
think i am getting roughly 20 to the gallon at the minute, not sure how many litres there is to a gallon, is it 4.5 ????
like i said it runs fine and am pretty sure its had a service in the last 5000-6000 miles.
any ideas what it could be??

20mpg is not normal.
I get 24 - 28 when driving around town in traffic. When I'm on the motorway its 30+
I had a problem with my O2 (lambda) sensor which caused me to run rich and was giving me 16 - 19MPG. This caused the engine managment light to come on and when sitting in traffic produced a strong petrol smell (because of the rich fuel).
There are a few things that can cause your fuel to run rich, by far the easiest way is to get that car plugged into VAGCOM and see if any faults are indicated.
Also have you got the computer onboard which tells you your MPG, average MPG, average speed etc ? Its a fairly good way of seeing what mpg you are getting rather than trying to work it out. Just leave it on the average MPG and see what you get.

i always think its funny when you petrol guys slate the TDI owners then moan about economy :evil:

assuming you paid £1 a litre, you've done 15.911 mpg IIRC the 2.0 8v is about 33 mpg so either you're ragging it everywhere or constant town driving.
My GT TDI 150 will average 52-55 mpg from a tank, so normally get 500-550 before i fill up :smiley:

them 150 tdi, really do fly, my friend had one, always wondered what it would have been like if it had be chipped/remapped, what you reckon 200 bhp ???
i can live with 25-30mpg, but not 15,thats just crazy for a daily runner, my boxster does 25!
looks like it needs booking in for a read out.

my 1.8t is giving me poo MPG...fuel bank 2 is rich...need to suss the problem STILL.lol
do the O2 sensors throw up something to say thry're faulty in VAGCOM?
still think i may have a boost/vac leak. not got round t checking.lol

If your O2 is gone VAGCOM will pick it up. As I said in my earlier post rich running fuel gives of a strong petrol smell, give your exhuast a good wiff, but not too much.

you're looking at ~195bhp and silly amounts of torque, standard the 150 has more torque than a boxster, impreza and clio V6
change the turbo on them and you can happily get 260bhp for road use.

thanks mate!! i have VAGCOM myself, and have the errors ive posted before: fuel bank 2 is too rich, leak between throttle body and turbo and secondary air injection leak/fault i think...live in wakefield so lonnng way. thanks for the idea though mate!

Ah right, didnt know you had them error codes.
At least its something to work on, shame it doesnt explain why the fuel bank is too rich. Looks like you got to get checking for leaks.

yea think it must be. was driving reali crap n juddery this morning then ok, but intermittently decides it doesnt wanna be powerful.lol sometimes u boot it n it reali goes then it doesnt wanna. probably somethink leaking somewhere. sounds like a vaccum pipe. we'll see. Thanks

2.0 gti ... london - glasgow trip 427 miles 1 & 1/4 tanks.....shud av kept th@ crappy old 1.8 vectra lol,got me there 3/4 of a tank lol (then again come to think ov it i was paying out for new engine sensors every other day lol)

Mines a W 2.0l gti and as others have said your mpg is way off. If I really granny drive it I can get about 42mpg if I don't get stuck in traffic. Normal driving I get somewhere between 32-37, again mainly depending on how often I get stuck in traffic. Even if I boot it (which is kind of a requirement to make the 2.0 actually go fast :P) my mpg doesn't suffer too much.
Is it running okay ? Mine once went through a phase of reporting 15-20mpg and the engine was running a bit rough. It started doing this after the oil warning light came on and continued running like this for about a week after being topped up. I had it booked to go into the garage and the day before it just went back to normal. Not sure if this was a result of it going into safe mode or something ? It really was using sh!t loads of petrol too, not just reporting the mpg wrong. Needless to say the oil is checked weekly now.

Mines around the same if not exact. If i drive nice and easy can easiliy get 38-40mpg. However if im putting my foot down then 15-25mpg. Filled the tank up last week, still a bit over half and ive done 152miles. Ive noticed that the top half of the tank gives more mileage so you might wanna use just the top half, ud get more for your £20.
This week ive also redlined in 2nd and 3rd so i reckon theres defo something wrong with the car thats giving 70miles to £20

i've got a 1.8gti turbo stage1 revo'd and i did 330miles on one tank and the light still hadnt come on yet dont run it low on purpose jus couldnt find a shell garage was at 330 when i filled up and wasnt in the red or light on n people say u get crap economy from the 1.8turbo

I thought the 1.8T was quite well regarded (for a petrol...) for its fuel economy. Certainly more economical to run than the 2.0 Great fuel economy on M-way's, maybe not so much doing town driving

i got a 18 t last nite done bout 100 miles in it mostly motorways the com said it was doin 47 mpg most of the way but wen u planted it it went down to bout 20mpg which i thought was pretty good

I take it that was on "current" MPG, leave it on "average" and see what you get. I cant quite seem to get much sense out of it, doing 50 in 5th gear in mine (2.0) gives me a current MPG of something like 60-70 MPG yet my "average" doesnt change that much, I'm a little suspect of these on board computers.

Mines around the same, if im on around 2-3000 revs i get pretty good mpg out of it.

ye that was on current average reading was 32 i tink but like u say it dont seem to move much im bit diiapointed with the on board com my mk3 had allsorts on like oil temp is always nice to i cant find it on mine

4th gear 38-45mph should get you over 40mpg....mine was giving 50odd today

Give my car in for a service today and also getting the bush replaced so hopefully my car will be squeak free when i pick it up tonight!!
Ive put blue coolant in too but ive told him to get that drained and replace it with red, found out in the manual later that its not the blue one.
What do you think of 10-30w semi oil Alan? Uncle said itd be better for colder weather is this true?

Not even close to that ! I have never seen 40MPG on my average MPG ( let alone 50 !!). The highest I have ever seen on mine is 39 and that was when I was actively driving like a granny to see how high I could get it, got to the 39 and got bored so drove normally. I have no idea how you are getting 50, are you sure its on the average reading (the one with the circle and the line going through it, see attached pic) and that you actually have a 2.0 GTi lol.
With regards to oil I'm no expert on the properties of each rateing. I use 5w-40 Castrol oil as its fully synthetic and I am led to belive that this is better for the engine (cost a couple of quid more). I would just keep using what ever oil you have in there already as its not ideal you mix oils, If you dont know whats in there then try and get it replaced at the servce (all up to you and how much monnnies you want to spend). I can not stress how important it is you keep an eye on your oil levels and dont let it run low as the 2.0 can be oil thirsty.

Im pretty shocked at that Alan, im kinda sure its average mielage but ill double check when i bring it home tonight...yeah im always makin sure oil levels are ok but its just that for some reason unlce thinks 10-30w is better for winter so it confused me a bit. He said its fine to top up with any other oil as long as its 10-30w.Whats the dif between fully and semi?
My mate has a MG ZR 1.4 and he gets around 200-220 out of a full tank, with Shell Optimax i get 300 and normal fuell around 250. Id rather have my GTi than that piece of rubbish!!

In fairness you could argue that the three thick bars are an indicator of oil temp, you're not supposed to give it the beans till the needle has passed these.....

It is the water temp gadge.... defo no oil... and the advice not to gun her till its above the lines is what i do too, as for oil the thin oil as in 5w is the stuff you want, if you have a tdi or a higher milage motor then semi syn is prob the best stuff, its a little thicker, i user castrol RS in my wagon, but magnatex is the stuff i will start using once the milage starts to rise abit.

My V6 4mo averages 25. I drove in traffic from York to Hull at 40mph a few weeks back, acheived 36 on average. On the motorway doing 80-100 I get 25 average. it averages about 20 round town.
At a constant 140mph, about 11mpg. If I cared, i'd have bought the TDI :-)
