So where does it get its information from?? Is it the same avenues as all the other sat nav systems out there??

My TMC worked last month on my Nurburgring trip in Holland and Germany (great feature by the way) but does not work here. (MFD2)

MFD2 is enabled for TMC but the DVD's supplied to date were not so enabled. Apparently VW UK would/did not pay the licence fee to the disc manufacturers for the privilege  Your TMC worked in Europe because those countries did
Good news if VW have now gone all EU friendly - nowt to do with the Government or politics though

Have they paid the licence fee now then? Are the 2008 disks enabled?

not sure, but my RNS 510 touchscreen which came in from germany (via ebay) must have the most up to date maps I guess, as the TMC has worked since day 1. it provides a list of traffic problems and also displays queuing traffic on the map.

I'm sure mine didn't work on the 07 plate Ed30 I bought in March.. I assumed that this was still the case. :undecided: I'll have to check it again.

There are 2 sat nav cd's/dvd's. One has TMC and the other doesnt. Those of you who have the one that has TMC will get traffic feeds.
MFD2 uses TMC when you load a TMC enabled cd or dvd into it
IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT CD/DVD YOUR USING !!!
Dj kolia is doing them at not £10, not £20 but thirty GBP a pop which is good value for money

Why is it that I can get TMC in europe then and not the UK?
My DVD is the Navigation Europa (V4)
also has Blaupunkt, Teleatlas and ViaMichelin writen on the front.
No mention of TMC though but as I said above, it works in Holland and Germany.
-
Don't know about pan-European DVDs but my original 2005 UK CD wasn't TMC-enabled (thanks VW) but the new one I bought is and works fine. It gets its information from Classic FM, who carry the messages. The CD states explicitly that it supports TMC (the old one didn't).
-
Hi there,
Does anybody know if VW have included UK TMC in the 2008/V5 DVD or will I have to buy the latest (and expensive!) Blaupunkt/Teleatlas DVD?
Can't really find any up to date info on this.
My headunit is the 2005 DVD based MFD2.
Thanks
-
I am not really following this but I have mfd2, I live in glasgow and each day there are traffic data messages, I think these are tmc. Will post my disc details tomorrow.
-
Thanks - that will be helpful.
-
You got a link ?
-
mine works with TMC illyan, depends on what disc you have.

The blaupunkt disc I have is 2007/2008, Thanks To Mark_Eire for purchasing before I bought the car from him, else I would probably never have bothered. There is a TMC logo on the disc box...I get TMC messages.
Shame the system is total pants mind you...my IPhone provides far better satnav facilities.
-
I've got a RNS 510 and an iphone, how can you seriously say the iPhone is better, it doesn't have turn by turn directions for a start.
I've found the RNS 510 to be great.
-
You have an RNS510....I have the mfd2, I take it that these two units are not one in the same thing? Dont take me too literally mate, the mfd2 gets a crap reputation on here, I am sure not too many would defend it that robustly. Awaits an avalanche of ....
The I do think that iphone satnav works very well considering besides being a phone, it's almost a full web device, an email portal, a camera, an ipod, a games machine, a world radio, a device for remotely setting my skyplus, giving me live footy results when i am in the pub, a dvd/ video player and a remote way of watching bbc iplayer, watching porn, an e-reader, google earth, a wee guitar and posting on internet forums just like this from the train...oh and it has the complete works of shakespeare in there too....sure it has its limitations, nothing is perfect, even my GTI.

Haven't bothered checking mine but I should do as its a very useful feature
-
I have the MFD2 also, CD version and its 'ok', nowhere near the best system in the world but it does the job. Currently running on the 2007 TMC version disc. TMC does work although its not that great.
-
Perhaps I can clear up a couple of points for you (to the best of my knowledge)
MFD2 uses Blaupunkt Teleatlas Mapping.
RNS510 uses Navteq.
RNS510 has excellent support for TMC with detailed traffic updates and information.
MFD2 has two versions of CD/DVD available, with or without TMC - Obviously the TMC is dearer.
TMC on the MFD2 is quite limited and only covers motorways in the UK. EU is better.
TMC is broadcast by radio stations, in the UK it used to be limited to Classic FM but it has better coverage now i think.
-
The RNS510 is BY FAR the best in car OEM supplied satnav unit I've ever used.
And if it wasn't for the "not quite complete" postcode searching, I'd say it was as good if not better than TomTom.
The built in HDD for MP3, the ability to add Bluetooth for a proper integrated phone system etc makes it a fantastic solution.
I think the mfd2 is some way behind according to those users.
-
^what he said :-)
-
RNS 510 V2 DVD, TMC works fine. I was actually driving today and got a voice message warning of potential traffic problems ahead, first time thats happened.
V3 disc is I think the most recent disc. Why buy off Ebay when you can download for free off most torrent sites. I downloaded it burnt to DVD works like a dream.
-
Thanks for your help everyone. So it looks like I need to look for the VW v5/2008 with TMC.
-
TMC in the UK is not free as it is in Europe so VW must have payed the fee for an OEM licence.

I think they are cheaper from Teleatlas.

Be carefull with these Copied discs, they have a tendancy to fail, there was a post a while back with people having problems with these copied versions. Best of with the Origoinal.
