Could be the hall sender.

If the car is not starting at the moment then this should tell you if the hall sender is working or not:

Disconnect the coil-dizzy lead at the dizzy end and place in the engine lifting eye (red arrow top left) so it can arc on the cambelt cover. Then turn the ignition on and turn the engine over. If there are sparks in quick succession then the hall sender should be ok. If there is just one spark when the ignition is turned and then none when the engine is turning over it is probably the hall sender. If this is the case give the hall sender connector (the other red arrow) a wiggle and try turning the engine over again.

If that doesn't work then the sender is f**ked, but sometimes it is just the connection.

if it is the hall sender do i need a new dizzy it was running fine and then just cut out

should there be a live or an earth because there is an earth at the plug but no live and the sensor seems dead

The first thing to do is check the coil wires for a postive 12V or there abouts if coil is ok then follow down to the coil leads to dizzy test each plug as mentioned before to see timming of spark if no spark probely coil has packed up.
If there is a spark with good timming check the spark plug individually for the same results of spark it could be faulty plugs?
The reason why I test this method is so I don't have to spend a shed load of cash hopping to find the fault meaning changing out cheap stuff first from diagnostics.

Worst case its the ECU pin 25 I think to Hall sender, but I would test the Hall sender first for a resistor signal from the three pin plug.
Electrical is pretty simple unless you had my problem where a new coil failed aswell which I ignored as it was new so changed it out twice and it fired up first time.
the other possiblility is a bad earth but simple enough to see from the coil to the dizzy cap! Oh yeah a school boy error is that some people put the earth back onto the negative ground which arcs the power away it should be on the bracket holding the coil so three wires negative, postive and earth. Three seperate connectors!

If that doesn't work then the sender is f**ked, but sometimes it is just the connection.

Have you tried wiggling the hall sender connector about?

Edit: when you say sparks, do you mean you get just 1 spark when the ignition goes on or it sparks in quick succession as normal?

one spark but it doesnt do it all the time meaning no spark also should the earth not pulse when the engine is being tured over and the earth is weak but is still earthed

I had a similar problem (a few times actually)

It was the ignition moduel? (the small thing that sits ontop of the ecu)

I had spark but it wouldnt run.

Hope that helps

to be honest I cant remember

Its worth investigating though.

Does your fuel pump prime for 3 seconds on ignition?
