My friend has a problem with his golf,- seems he cannot select reverse on his 8 valver- it also crunches sometimes when he selects second and fourth?? - i had a look at ityesterday and i cannot get it into reverse even manually ( from the engine bay). Could this be the push rod has worn down?
What is the ebst option as he has a spare gearbox for an 8valver, should he sort the poush rod out or just change boxes over? any advice much appreciated.

When you did it manually from the engine bay, did you disconnect the linkage? Its unlikely you will be able do it from the engine bay as the gear lever will baulk it. Try disconnecting the linkage...........if it then works then its your linkage needs adjusting.

linkage needs adjusting.
I too am having gear selection problems and suspect the linkage may be at fault. My problem gears are 1st and 5th ???
Can anybody please advise how simple this is to rectify (for a novice mechanic) or how much to get fixed at a garage.
Cheers
David

On a mk2 if it is linkage, its easy enough to fix........just time consuming and trail and error.
When I did it on the father in laws recently, I made sure the gear lever was between 1st and 2nd and tightened the linkage there..........seemed to work.

chnaged gear boxes over today car is now running sweet no crunching etc.- It was the synchromesh- so now i have a spare gearbox that needs the syncromesh sorting if anyone wants it.

Try starting the engine and they you will go backwards

I'll have it mate..............don't chuck it. Where are you?
I can probably get the synchro fixed.......
