Title: Worth Waiting till im 19?
Post by: BSCR on 20 November 2007, 12:39
Hey evry1, iv been looking into insurance for my 1.6 1992 Driver

So far with it TPFT in my name, with my parents as 2nd and 3rd drivers i can get it down to £785ish

Im 19 in april and wont really need it until then as im at uni for the mean time. (i would like it during christmas and easter but could live with out it)

My question as in the title "Would it be worth waiting until im 19 to insure it?"

Any body had any experiences?

also why does the price drop with my parents as named driver? *(just curious, not arguing lol)

I think the insurance company assumes that they will be driving some of the time so this reduces the time you are behind the wheel, hence cheaper price, but not 100%

The sooner you get insurance the better as you can build up your no claims, age plays a part in the cost but experiance is a big factor, the longer you have been driving the more NCD you have the cheaper it will be. Start your insurance from when you start driving on a daily basis otherwise garage the car until you can afford to run it.

its always worth checking both with and without your parents as although some companies give cheaper rates for having them on there, others discount for insured only driving.

Being a year older will certainly drop the rate, basically young driver normally get an age loading which reduces as you get older and then eventually turns into a discount when you start getting proper old!  This is why a 18yr old who has the same experience as a 19yr old will usually get higher quotes. Also remember that by waiting it will have a knock on effect in the future eg you will be 20 at your next renewal not 19 so will continue to get lower age loadings.

On the flip side though as dave said its always a good idea to start building up no claims bonus and getting some experience as soon as possible.

Cheers 4 the replys guys, ill have to give it some thought, 785 is half what my last insurance policy was a year or so ago on a 1.1 renault 5. 1400quid! I cant imagine it dropping much more from 785 as the car is high risk i guess?

this time last year i looked 2 insure the same golf and it was 2500 for a 17yearold so i left it and went with the renault, good laugh actually that car,

now iv got the golf and the just sent the log book off 2 the DVLA and got the key Woo!

Ill will deff ring he and see if he can beat that 785 for me! be well impressed if he can.

Also what sorta mods do people tell their insurance companys about? if any? just curious.

i would claim all mods, its not worth the risk if you have an accident and they then dont pay out. the mod may not affect the insurance but at least you have told them.

not only that, if you went with HIC, martin would be able to see what you have done to the car as most people post up on here what they do

Fair enough, im not planning anything major, may end up being nothing if its pushing my premiums up to much.

Not sure home much a 40-60mm drop will affect it, maybe an air filter change, strut brace and.....id like 2 do the GTi Cam change and chip but think that it wont be too popular with the insurance so prob leave that.

anybody had any experience of these changin your insurance?

EDIT: Just requoted and for things such as lowering, engine chip, tints, alloys, non standard filters and......oh yeh...grill change/interior mods it added around 100quid a year. prob me worth doing really....still ill only change it once there done - if i do them

LOL yeah im watching you!!!!  :nerd:

Always declare your mods its not worth the risk. Depending on the company they often dont cost as much as you might think, many of our schemes allow certains mods for no extra charge, some of our schemes will only quote for modified cars!

Mine add about 600 quid for exhaust modification. Such a joke it will only change my bhp by 1-2 if anything at all. Only have a magnex back box

as i said mate, it depends on the company. With us there is likely to be little or no change as we specialise in golfs & modded cars but if you go with a more mainstream company then yeah they may want to charge silly amounts.
