hi all, fetted a new head unit in my mk3 - i have wired it up so the yellow goes into the yellow and red but once you take the key out the head unit wont switch on and also when you turn the ignition back on all the settings and station presets are gone. i am thinking it might have something to do with the clifford alarm cutting all power when armed? :undecided:
-
had the same, a few years back, the wire colours didnt match,
changed the so called ignition and permanent live wires over, and bingo, job was a good un
-
cool, will check this
-
need to get check the cars wiring, find out which is perm, which is ign live and go from there
-
i just pluged the blocks in to the blocks in the car, i doubt it would be wired wrong? :undecided:
-
Vw's and Vauxhalls have this problem with the positive wiring needing changing around.
-
yepm mine was a vauxhall
and i have the same on the valver i just bought
-
Hi mate, Yellow is permanent live plug both red and yellow together into yellow...
or red..... i forget now but the yellow and red go into the same one!

cheers guys, sorted it out in the end, the wires seemed to be the wrong way round :undecided:
-
Good news. Don't know why they don't all make the wiring the same way.

cool, glad your sorted, wanna come sort mine out now
-
I cant see how people go wrong, aslong as you have the wire guide for the mk3, which is on this forum, and the wire guide for ur headunit, which comes with it, normally stuck on it, how can you go wrong, its like snap...!!
Glad its all sorted, nice one

i was using the original wiring loom plug, and an iso connector specifically for that head unit. i just clipped them all together, and there was only one way they would go.
believe it or not, i had to cut and re crimp 2 wires after swapping them,
Thats where the confusion comes in,
-
I just cut and crimp all my wires, that way i know exactly where i am, so much easier, plus then adding and removing bits etc is so much simplier, i guess some peopel just dont have a head for wires and colours etc :D

yeah i did the same, just pluged and played but it was wrong. random

if you had used an extension ISO block in there...u probly had the PC4-04 vauxhall cable in there which switches the lives over for u...n therefore not necessary..if it was str8 into the VW loom then thats odd...but most headunit power looms allow the ability to switch power supply yellow n red over by means of bullet connectors 9which u have alredy worked out by now) n therefore that is the answer to which u have discovered

this'll fox you all, I have tried all of the above, switched them round, put them together and as soon as the car locks or the alarm is armed the radio looses its settings.
I was going to run a live direct off the batter but I am concerned about blowing up the headunit?
Suggestions???

Or forgetting to turn the stereo off and waking up to a flat battery.

yeah I suspected that to be a problem, I need to get in there with my volt meter thing and double check for a current, maybe run it off the ignition or lighter?

i had to run a feed from the battery in my mk1, just make sure you put an inline fuse as close to the battery positive as you can, should be fine!
-
yeah, best thing to do is t run a multimeter and check wot power supply your getting...check which is permanent and which is supposedly ignition live and switch then accordingly. just elliminate any cables you dont need to power the head unit from the power supply block.speaker block isnt realy any concern so leav that as it is.
other reason for this is if you have had an aftermarket alarm fitted and the fitters have somewhat patched up cables with use of those behind the head unit...not the best way of doing things but i'v seen sum bodge jobs dun that way. if its the factory alarm and immobiliser...then that is very peculiar.
chek further down the original VW wiring loom to assure nothing has been compromised with any wires or patched elswhere! But get the ole meter on it n see wot readings you get!
-
i have a laserline alarm and have the same problem with loosing all the settings, the stereo comes on as it should when the keys turned but all the settings are lost, is it jut a case of swapping the yellow and red over so the red goes into yellow of the hu and yellow goes into the red of the hu??
-
dats the general rule of thumb in the event of powering up but resetting of memory at every start point of ignition!try it n see how u get on..one way to find out realy!goodluck with that!
-
right i still have this fault and it must be down to the cliford, so to fix should i just run a cable from the bat to the head unit with an inline fuse?
-
So to clarify...u have used a voltmeter and have tested the lives for the radio!?
Do u get a constant live without ignition?? If so....then i dont see how wiring a new live from the battery will help....if you decide to try this anyway....all you need to do is assure you have a fuseholder in between somewhere to prevent any future shorting of the radio and locate the fuse holder somewhere accessible.
but if you're getting a LIVE without the key in the ignition, then that should assure that the radio holds its memory which should route in line to the yellow cable of the radio power lead! you could if you want wire both red and yellow to that LIVE cable which basically keeps the radio on even without ignition, but you just got to remember turn it off everytime or remove the face which is technically switched off without it!
Did u look further down the original VW wiring for the radio to see if it had been compromised in anyway? any scotchlocks or connectors attached anywhere that may be catering for an external source...i.e...your alarm?
wel, if you have tried everything else, then by all means try routing a new cable from battery..or even just trace a patched in lead from the fuse box battery LIVE...same thing realy! or if for a quick diagnosis...jus run a cable outside the car into the car door to the back of the radio just to test your headunit..if you find that method is effective, then u can decide to route that cable properly! keep us posted on how u get on!

no there is no live, its seems when the key is out something cuts the power i am guessing the alarm is doing this. Will have a bash at a direct feed
