Hi everyone.
I have 4000 quid to spend on a golf. At the mo, i am wanting a MK4 1.8 GTI Turbo. Have asked many people what they think, and half say spend it on a MK3. What do you all think. I just like the look of the MK4. And its a TURBO.
This will be my first golf, and cant wait as i have had a punto and a corsa. So its time to see what all the rage is about.
I live in east London and have been quoted 770 full comp from esure on a V reg 1.8 GTI T. Is this good as i am 28.
Please help me pick. The money is just sitting here!
-
Get the Turbo!!
just my opinion mind.
-
if you can afford it get the mk4 !!! you will regret getting a mk3 unless its mint. I feel the mk4 is so much nicer to drive more refined more relible, well electrics arnt much different, if i could afford a mk4 id get one as i have nothing but trouble on the 3 mk3's i have had even the good one i had, jsut my opinion though. I want a mk4 my mates ahs been problem free his v reg one and is much nicer
-
This is just my opinion.
If I was going to get a MK4 (which I have lol). I'd save up another 1k and spend 5k on a nice, decent, tidy lower mileage one.
If you can afford it, get the MK4.
(You might be better off asking this in the VW related section as I cant see anyone in this section saying "Yeah, get the MK3" ! lol)

^^^ i did
-
mk4 and then remap it :) much more fun!
-
^^^ i did
No, you said get the MK4, or am I missing something?
-
It has got to be the 1.8T  and you NEED a remap  You will not be disappointed
-
Nice 1 guys for all the replies. I think it will have to be the MK4 then.
Not too sure if i can afford another 1k, maybe an extra 500 at a push.
Thanks again, will keep you all informed.
-
Good luck.
Post some of the cars you intend to look at on here.
-
depends what you want, i love the bora 1.8t but i prefer the vr due to the sound it makes!! with that cash you could get a mint tuned vr! get it supercharged for £1500 quid and then you have 260-300 bhp to play with!
-
If its costing him £770 for a fully comp 1.8T he will probably have to remorgage the house to get insured on a supercharger VR6.
-
I recently sold my modded VR in favour of buying my mums 1.8T as it is one owner and only 50k from new. Now I really wish I still had my VR
Guess its just a personal choice, I just think the 6 sounds lovely and is a bit more raw than the later 1.8T, sure the mk4 is more refined, but I personally prefer the earlier model in terms of how it drives although the Mk4 is a nicer shape :undecided: hard choice!

It's a no-brainer...go for the MKIV
-
You could consider the V5 Mk4, could be cheaper to buy than the 1.8T but not as tuneable. If it doesn't have to be a Golf you'll get the 170 brake version of this engine in the Seat Toledo on a Y plate for 4K fairly easily. Other option is the Bora.

Mk3 VR is has to be, screw them boxed square shaped box's they call mk4's

-
Its all about what you can afford. I love my mk4 so nice to drive and so reliable ( toaching wood million times now lol ).
Not driven a 1.8turbo but from what i hear there mint.
-
they need tweeking big time mind, the suspension is sooooo bad as standard!
-
agreed ^^^ a set of eibachs makes a big difference with a good ride still
-
You could consider the V5 Mk4
you would be better off getting the 1.8T or the V6 4Mo as the V5 doesn't have enough power for its weight
-
I have a MK4 GTi for driving around with the missue and a mk2 8V GTi with a very turned engine for the weekend. It seems to be the perfect setup.
However I'v have heard that the Turbos can have a lot of problems so have a good look around before buying.
To be honest I would go for the GT TDI and chip it. (MK4)
VR6 fast but with pertol prices????and it will have to be a highline!

Dont you think the MK3 looks more like a box than the MK4??

I have a 1.9 tdi so i am guessing suspension set up is roughly same as the 1.8 t.
How much for a decent suspension setup then?
