Any one owned one of these?? There is one for sale for £1200 and i see it as quite an investment...dont ask why! Come on guys, the guys in the MK3 section seem to abit too busy, its burgandee and i might ask if i can take it for a little test drive tomorrow
-
16v not bad, 8v too slow. £1,200 for a 16v would be about right if it is half decent condition.
-
So if its not a 16v...dont bother? xD....how much horsepower do these things tend to push...i might not be looking in the right area but i cant seem to find much on the net!
-
Look on page 12 of the link below of the write up on the MKIII :nerd:

thanks hurdy but can i just quote the following
The power-to-weight ratio had slipped from 133 bhp per ton to 113. That translated into a top speed of 124 mph and a sluggish 0-60 mph time of 8.7 seconds - surprising, as the new GTI had a larger 2.0 litre engine with Digifant multi-point electronic fuel injection system and regulated catalytic converter. With an enlarged bore and stroke at 82.5 mm and 92.8 mm respectively, the output rose to 115 bhp at 5400 rpm
I think the 0-60 speed is for a 16v!! it's common knowledge the 8v needs around 9.7 seconds!! and thats about all mine can do :embarassed:

If you are looking for something nippy and fun then don't bother with the Mk3 - get a decent Mk2 16v instead. If you will be doing longer distances and/or want refinement and comfort at a low budget instead then buy the Mk3.
-
i rekon go with the mk3, its the 2nd best looking golf!! im gettin a 16v next month for my when my girlfriend finaly passes her test!! 150bhp and 0-60 in 8.1, quite nippy

Sorry Joe, but the Mk3 16v is a pile of pooh compared to the Mk2 16v - in terms of speed and handling and looks.
-
I have owned 3 - 4 Mk3 GTI's (all 8v's admittedly) and 2 VR6's but they don't compare to the Mk2 16v in any way. Also, the Mk2 8v is much much better than the Mk3 8v GTI which for a GTI is shockingly  Mind you, I am looking purely from a GTI perspective. Still, they aren't as bad as the Mk4 GTI (Non-Turbo)
If the Mk3 8v GTI didn't have the GTI badge, it would be a great car. Comfortable, makes good progress and an excellent motorway cruiser. Ditto for the 16v.
The Mk5 has the best of both - sporty and fun like the Mk1 and Mk2's, yet refined and comfortable like the Mk3 and Mk4's. Superb

Just gave the garage a call...apparantley there is a problem with it

Hmmm, wonder what the MKII boys would say about this over in their section
-
Agreed!! The mk2 Gti (both) are kick a$$!! Mk3 are bad excuse for a gti in my opinion.. :undecided:
-
Well I guess you are entitled to your opinions too!
So why if you love Mk 2's so much do you lot have Mk5's?
have said this many times and will continue to do so! Find me a Mk2 with ABS and Air-Con!
End of story!

Because mk5's are even better.. but give me a choice between 2 & 3.. and 2 wins hands down! They were just quality through and through! Not talking about just looks either, a couple of my mates ones were always going wrong in some way.

Driving a Mk5 has addled yer brain man!

I have a Mk2 GTI... and had one with ABS and air-con too - G60 Syncro. But since when did a GTI's reputation depend on ABS and aircon?
-
Ah now that dont count coz its LHD! :smug:

So LHD GTI's are not GTIs? Also, the early Mk3's didn't have aircon or ABS - I found out the hard way when driving a K Reg Mk3 8v GTI and tried to brake hard from a brisk speed as I wasn't expecting a concrete barrier in front of me when pulling off dual carriageway in London. Needless to say, it scared the life out of me when the car skidded for a few metres until I relaxed the brakes - lesson learnt...
-
So you are comparing a one off with a standard car?
To make a fair comparison with your G60 Syncro I would have to fit Audi TT quattro running gear/engine!
Standard cars I'm talking!
-
If it's a nice example and you like it? Buy it.
There's a lot of 8v bashing which I think is just unfair. They are great cars and accessible for people that can't afford the insurance of a 16v.
My 8v is a superb, fun motor which is more than nippy enough for me. I love it!
Cheers,
James

I do really like it but apparantley there is a problem with the idle when you start the car up and the car has been stopped for a long time so they are not sure if it starts up....

Yeah, but just don't corner too fast in it or you'll end up in a hedge
-
Got any simple fixes for that? Or is a dead case unlike the Mk4 that corners just as well?

    and thats from a mk3 owner!! Where the mk5 was developed on a handling circuit the 3 and 4 were developed on a handling straight!!
-
hey boney mind you don't get out of your depth venturing all this way from the mkIII forum
btw what is your sig pic all about dude

Aftermarket suspension and uprated anti-roll bars and maybe front and rear struts - think of it like a body without a skeleton... you have to provide the scaffolding to keep it in shape

I loved our VR6. It was that purple colour that cost a cr@p load to get resprayed and it was stunning.
My mom had a corsa and then my dad threw her into the VR6 as her car and she admits she loved it so much and then a BMW 3 series which was like going back to a corsa again and then the GTI
According to my grandfather (a very wise man) who has thrashed both the VR6 and our GTI. This Mk5 knocks the pants off everything he has ever driven.
-
no luck with the MK3 GTI...found out there is a problem with the idle when you start the car and something wrong with the battery...

Its for the best Manu - believe me... Now dry your tears and buy a Mk2 8 or 16v - you'll wonder what you saw in the Mk3 in the first place - I did when I changed from a Mk3 to Mk2... it was a revelation
