Goes to fill up , opens flap via switch in door , unscrews cap ......
now where the f*ck do I put the cap ?
a) hold it
b) let it hang
c) hang it over the flap door
a) looks silly (but what I currently do)
b and c could lead to scratches
My fiancees MRS has a hook on the flap to hang it out of the way
, is it me or did VW miss something obvious?
maybe I will be forced to add a DIY small hook to save my lacquer

totally agree, i thought exactly the same!! i looked and saw no hook. thought wtf?
-
Just let it hang over the flap
-
Do *NOT* hook it over the cap, like it says in the manual - you WILL scratch the paint on the cap
You need to be an expert in human contortion to hold the cap AND the pump at the same time

Don't hook it, hang it.

On my MKiv the cut outs on the cap held it secure, no messing about. Its not half as good on the Mkv, sometimes it stays sometimes it falls off. I have tried the cap in different positions

Hurdy, what he's saying is that it's a c**t of a thing to use whichever way you do it.
It's designed to hang in the cut outs on the fuel flap but the plastic ropey thing snags and twists and generally pi**es about so you get tucked off and just let it rest against the body of the car.
I have never owned a car with so many thoughtful, 'suprise and delight' intuitive features.
This isn't one of them.

sounds like the MKIV scores another hit against the MKV
never have a problem :smug:

I guess this issue is aggravated by the fact that GTI needs frequent filling.
However, I have had cars that you had to place the fuel cap on the roof whilst filling. That was a '89 Ford though. Guess things have advanced since.
-
OR ...... when you fill up, remove the fuel cap from the car completely and place it on the shelf next to the petrol pump. Easy, no scratching and doesn't require a juggling act!
And before anyway says it, if you are worried about forgetting to screw the cap back on after filling, then you are a complete rod and shouldnt be trusted with flammable substances in the first place!
-
you guys are just being arkward now. Knit picking
-
lmfao, another good thread :D
-
No probs with my MKII slots onto the flap and no scratches after nearly 20 years of use.

So who's going to be the first to mod their petrol cap with a soft spongy layer so you can let it all hang out without the fear of scratched paintwork?
-
wiered!! i was just going to post a new thred about this!!! haha. ive got sick of mine and have removed it yesterday!! just took it of the rubber
my CTR had a hole to hang it on/in
-
take of the rubber "string" which attaches it to the car. tie some string though the cap and make a look. next get a nail and glue it to the flap, make sure you put it in the right place to the door closes.
done, you have a cap you can now take of and hand on the flap.

its still a bit stupid that on £20k car you have a problem like this!!
-
We dont have a problem. Just stick it on the backseat
Or not........
Like somebody said. Just put the cap on the pump and you cant forget it. STOP BEING LAZY!

-
I let it hang - the cap that is. Didn't realise it might scratch the paintwork  I'll be checking for any damage now but I haven't noticed any. I'll get a pair of plyers and cut the bl00dy thing so it can come off completely - like on the Mk2 GTI.
-
mayb just shorton the wire so it hangs but not on the body work
-
well at least it wasnt just me that thought it was odd :nerd:
cutting cable me thinks , whilst looking for a small black B&Q hook :smug:
-
I do admit that it is a bad design, but I can live with it as it is
-
why not get your butler to hold it!!
ooops I am in for trouble now...... :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed:
