This question has been answered by me loads of times, searchy searchy ;)
To answer the question, no it wont. Not only is the diameter too small, the 1.6 driver does not have a rear silencer so the GTI backbox has nothing to fix to! To fit one you have 3 options:
1) Cut off the long pipe from the 1.6 backbox, and have an adaptor fitted to size it up to the GTI box.
2) Fit a 1.8 Carb/Early GTI exhaust system from the downpipe back, the 'toilet bowl' 1.8 downpipe fits straight on the 1.6 manifold and ends up the same size as the rest of the GTI system
3) Fit a complete GTI system from the manifold back.
Options 2 & 3 are the hardest, theres no real room to fit them! If you plan to fit a GTI head later on down the line, I'd do it then as you can fit the lot complete.
