Sometimes on startup my alternator/fan belt squeals loudly for a few seconds then goes quiet again. Could you get someone else to start it while you've got you head in the engine bay - you'll be able to hear where its coming from.

normally squeals like that are caused via belts, normally loose due to wear....
is it worse the colder it is??

id say its your fan belt.

if it does turn out to be your starter motor then just hit it with a BFH. that seems to fix most things.
