I have a '91 8v and am having some problems with the wipers. they only work on one setting, the fastest one! wash/wipe action is fine and they run fine on high setting but i get nothing on intermittent or slower speed. the rear wiper doesn't seem to work at all. any help would be appreciated
cheers

I've just fixed mine this weekend.
You can take the stalks apart in ten minutes so long as you've got a 24mm socket (I think thats right IIRC) to take the steering wheel off.
To fix mine I just really carefully cleaned all the metal cotacts on the stalks with WD40, and all the wire connections, then cleaned the contacts on the wiper relays (in the fuse box). Then lubed up the moving parts.
You could try that first, then if they still don't work buy some replacement stalks off ebay.

im having a problem with the wipers on my MK2 GTI 8v (H reg 1991) They work, however when i switch them off on the stalk, they stop dead there and then no matter what position on the windscreen they are on... also the imtermittant/pulse wipe function doesn't work.......
Help!!
Its a pain in the A**e!

I'm no auto electrician but presumably thats a relay issue, as the relay tells the wiper motor when to power on and power off. Perhaps you've got the wrong type of relay in the wiper relay slot, or its just a bit knackered??

You don't know off hand where the wiper fuse is located? and/or which one it is...?

I haven't, but guess who has...

turns out it was dodgy relays. replaced the ones corresponding to the wipers and hey presto, good as new. thank god, i was starting to get dizzy watching the high speed wipers all the time! thanks for the help

find yourself a '99' relay from a MK3 golf or Passat, variable intermittant wipers
