As above really, got an original mk2 8v gti exhaust coming tomorrow to replace the powrflow backbox that's on it at the moment.
Only concern is that when the cam was put in the engine may have been set up with the exaust in mind and it'll cause running problems.
I bought the old girl with the cams already fitted so I don't know?!
What do you reckon?
Plus what should I order to replace the cam with the orignal - is it just the camshaft or are there other bits? gaskets and stuff?
Sorry for being so novice and asking so many questions at the minute :(
Just trying to get it all back to original.
-
because of the duration of the cam it'll be flowing alot more air but the exhaust should cope with it, you may lose a bit of power as it struggles to get rid of the gasses but the exhausts are pretty efficient anyway. to remove the cam you'll need new tappets as the 285 ones are shallower to allow for the bigger lobes of the 285.
-
Joe,
Cheers fella, that's almost exactly what I was hoping to hear. So worst case I'll just lose a bit of power until the time when I can get the standard cam back in? Excellent.
This has got to be one of the most spot on forums on the net...... to everyone that's helped out so far, cheers :)
-
If you do whip the cam and the tappits out , will you be selling them? If so, first dibs!!

Absolutely pall...... got a slightly stained, but very noisey powerflow back box up for grabs if you're interested too......
The cam and associated bits was over £200 new, I'll see how well it runs with the exhaust back to standard, but they're more than likely coming out..... I'll let you know.
Is VW the best place to get an original cam and tappers would you think?
-
WHereabouts are you located?
Tappits can be got from VW but I suspect the cam is no longer available so second hand would be your best bet. You quite often get people breaking cars/engines on here so it shouldn't be too hard to get hold of one. Also check out ww.edition38.com as I'm sure there was a standard 8v cam for sale on there the other day.
I think you'll need a new cam pulley too as the one fitted to yours will be a non standard one to dial in the hot cam. Rather then havong to re dial it for a standard cam it would be easier to swap back to the standard pulley.

tappets are stupid money from vw! i think i got some from eurocarparts, under half the price! might as well change the rocker cover gasket too. watch out when retightening the cam caps they dont need much torque.
-
New camshaft, pulley and tappets, rocket cover gasket - cool
So the next question is:
Anyone got an 8v standard cam for sale?
Horney - shame the magic cam fairies can't just swap ours over, would save a lot of trouble! (And I'm in Gloucester(ish), J13 of the M5)
-
Yeah that would be nice! I could come up to yours and do the swap but I have no idea how to tim eyour cam in on my car and I would need to do right to get me home!
Nick
-
So the only result is for you to move into my house, put your cam in my car then share my car? I don't know if the mrs would go for it but i could ask!?
-
I'd have to bring my wife to, oh dear this starting to look very complicated! How about we just swap engines? Ha ha.
Nick
-
lol - So in all seriousness then, if I took the car to someone who knew what they were doing, how long would it take them to swap the cam over and get the timing right? If it's not too massive I'll probably get it done in the next couple of weeks mate.
-
Bit of a hot in the dark but would say a couple of hours labour as putting the standard cam in and timing it in shouldn't be too hard.
How much you gonna be wanting for the old set up? Not sure I'm going to have any money till the end of Jan.
Nick
-
£50 plus postage? (or of course you can come and get it if you want?)
I don't mind holding it till you've got the money mate.
-
nick i got spare cam u could nick if u want??
think i may have pulley too, but it would need bolting together

yeah i got standard cam.... will see if i got cam pulley too, not sure i have now lol
-
ooooooh hello - did someone say they've got a standard cam?
Yes please :)
-
standard cam, no pulley thou
-
I reckon the cam is all i'll need chap. Dont think the pulley was changed-unless they`re the sort of things that are best sold as a pair?
How muchwould you want for it?
*Wrote all of that on a psp! LONG
-
Got the original exhaust back on, and wow!
Why did the chap before ever decide to change it!!!!? The standard one is quiet on idle, and up to about 4 thousand revs at which point it just grunts slightly.
I'm sure aswell that it's pulling better with the original on - shame I didn't get it brake tested before and after, but I'm convinced :)
Seems to be running alright with the piper cam too....... which is nice :)
Cheers for you help / advice etc once again.
Ric.
