i believe its the black sender on front of engine block, next to the blue one, kinda above oil filter

If its a 16v, theres three temp senders on the right hand side of the head (near the dizzy). They are all inter-changeable, so you can just unplug the red/yellow wire (thats the one for the dash gauge IIRC) and pop it on one of the other senders to check if you get a better signal.

sorry forgot to say its gti 8v

its the black sensor then mate
-
thanks a bunch, i'll have a fiddle and see if i get a reading! if not then i'll trace the wires back to the dash i suppose? or cud it be the sensor itself playing up?
-
Yep, its the black one. Dont think the sender is expensive from Euro's or GSF?

Maybe I lied!! 251 919 501 D - temp sensor for dash gauge - 2 pin, black £17.64.....ouch!

only get the ones from VW, around about the same price (i think) and alot more reliable!
probbaly is the sendor thats faulty... although check the connections and replace the connector if in doubt, do the cheap things first

bridge the pins on the plug, if the gauge shoots to max and the light starts flashing its the sender.
Also the earlier MK2s had the single pin sensor just like the 16v, its threaded into the flange on the front of the head. Look for a red/yellow wire, thats the gauge feed. If you do have the single pin jobber, earth it somewhere metal and check the gauge as above.

woah! i hate to be a noob but anyone got a pic of were it is cos im slightly confused? .. not like i've done an engine swap or anything (i actually have which is worrying i dont know this sender is lol)

follow the top radiator hose, the flange on the front of the head where this is connected contains all the temp senders :)
Look for the one with a red/yel wire ;)
