Title: 9.5mpg WTF!!!
Post by: Hurdy on 08 November 2007, 16:00
Okay, let me explain...las tweek I topped up the car and reset the trip to zero. Today I have topped it back up and (unless my calculations are wrong) I've just had an average of 9.5mpg

Normally I do not check mpg, but I thought I'd do another "round my local" check. Now I admit that I live next to countryside, with sweeping bends, steep hills etc and my right foot does like to feel the carpet , but an average of 9.5 mpg seems almost unnatainably low

74.1 miles on the trip.
35.49ltrs of super at 109.9 pence per litre
4.54 litres per gallon = 7.82 gallons
74.1miles/7.82 = 9.47 mpg

Or to put it another way 53p a mile

Has anyone else had fuel consumption like this?

Running my car in just now so can't really give a 'flying' mpg but just now my average is 31 mpg and the other night coming home from work (30 mile journey) I got to 37.5 mpg which I was very pleased about even if it did feel like I was driving like an OAP

Hurdy, I got mine down to 16 mpg during my track day at Castle Combe and I was going for it!

Think something must be amiss to be getting only 9mpg!!

You've either got a minor computer glitch (operator error ) or someone fitted the long range "Paris Dakar" fuel tanks between fill ups without you knowing.

Lets go with the computer glitch.

tbh i know the feeling
i would get it looked at
mine's comes in at 18 mpg around town
but the mpg gauge that changes when you're driving flickers around too much IMO (even showing 70-80mpg)!!!
taking it in tomorrow.........

I'm hoping it's a computer glitch. Still can't get my head around it. I may as well get a Hummer with that mpg

you sure you havent 'lost' some fuel by short filling the first time (thinking it was full) then putting more in later?
Its over a pretty short distance too , so maybe not a reliable guess lol

If its really 10 mpg then you must have the V8 edition golf

320 miles done so far @ 23.7 MPG average running in!

Tank definitely registered as full with the cut-out and with the guage inside :undecided:

Anyway, I'm giving it another go this week, but I'm off to the MPH/classic car show this weekend and so should get a lot better mileage on a run.

Johno's 'short fill' theory would be reasonable were it not for your gauge showing full when you set off. 9.5 mpg would be just about impossible to achieve however much you've been 'doorhandling' so we'll go back to operator error or 'Bart Simpson' mathematic underachievement.

I'm showing 30.5mpg over 3600 miles but occasionally I can get it to show 180mpg  on the instantaneous readout.

  Which is nice.

i get 19mpg around town and 23mpg on the motorway sat at 80mph, ive been tempted to take it in but they will just put it down to the remap   (smiles per gallon)

oh yea and i went to bp station in lancaster the other day 1.15.9 per liter!!!! WTF

So your fuel gauge had dropped from full to three quarters empty in only 74 miles? did you leave the handbrake on

Some kind of normality has been resumed

Filled up today with super and had travelled 230 miles on 34.5 litres.

230/7.6= 30.2mpg

The wifeee looked a bit coy when I asked her about it, so I'm presuming she reset the trip (as she does regularly in her own car) and not fessed up :lipsrsealed:

Hi

Just been browsing the forums for mpg feedback on ed30's and found this thread. Been worried of late about our mpg readings which seem to be around 21-23mpg. Car is not really canned and is driven around town most of the time. I am very surprised it is so low and wonder if there is something wrong or if it needs an ecu update or something.....

Cheers

Treacle.

I can understand people buying a TDI and then complaining about it not getting the last few mpg out of it, but if you buy a 240bhp car you must understand that it is not going to be particularly frugal in the fuel cosumption department.

However I must say that 21-23mpg does sound a little on the low side for town driving (unless you are always stood in traffic)

Seems normal to me, I never get much better than 23ish around town. But it goes right up to 33ish on motorway runs, you tried yours on a motorway run yet?  As a rough guide I get about 300miles from a tank, which I'm pleased with as my old R32 only did about 240miles & my Ed30 is much quicker!!

agree totally with what you are saying, but 22-23 does sound a tad low in my book. My 996 had a much better MPG, as did my Cooper S works.

goes up to about 27-28 on motorway driving. But as an overal since buying the car is about 22-23 and as i say we dont cane it either (as much as i would love too!)

18-24mpg is normal for me on a trip to town.

Unless I go into manual economy mode of course which means letting the car glide down hills in neutral and come to a stop in neutral when faced with traffic or traffic lights and of course being ultra light on the gas.         Then I get around 30mpg.

Today I picked my car back up from having a new MFD instrument binnacle in the dash, which also involved reprogramming of keys and whatever else

My mpg was a shocker of 34 on the way home!! Because I've lost all my previous figures, I've got some serious granny-esque driving to do, to get back my overall average of 49 back!!

Have to say - my ED30 does around 25mpg in mixed driving (10 mile motorway run to work then same again round town and 10miles back home). My old GTI did 30mpg. I reckon a loss of 5 is quite a lot for just an extra 30bhp. I've also got a bmw z4m coupe with 343bhp that does 24mpg. All Tesco 99 by the way. Every time.

But who cares? If you do you need a GT TDI.

But who cares?

non of the GTI owners (including me) did care untill petrol went through the fooookin roof !
V-Power use to be £0.94, now its £1.16 over here  :embarassed:

Its £1.07 over here but I still think its obscene.  It was 0.89p 6 months back. Also, I have noticed that the petrol went up with the recent rise in oil prices to nearly $100 a barrel (I've always wondered what size barrel they're on about) but then the prices have since gone down somewhat but with no corresponding decrease in prices at the pump.  I reckon Shell and the other oil companies are just cashing in - barstewards.

I've noticed something. On my mid-line screen it has menus under "1" and a "2" settings. kind of like two memories for the menus and info.
I've noticed that scrolling the menus/infos on "1" shows different readings to menus/infos on "2". Any idea why they have two readings for all menus?

Menu "1" is showing that my mpg is 22 and menu "2" is showing it as 32. Which is correct?

Standard GTi, 2500 miles on the clock; I drive moderately hard but generally only on short trips so am barely getting upto temperature. I get anywhere between 12mpg to 19mpg (about 250 miles to a tank); if I drive sedately I get about 22.5mpg and 32 on a long trip. Economy isn't brilliant but it is improved if you stay below 3000 rpm and avoid using the turbo fully.
