Title: Bring on the new competition!
Post by: 08micsta on 08 November 2007, 10:56
Dear Michael,

Hot hatch fans have never had it so good – and Ford’s about to offer even more with its revised Focus ST. We’ve got the first pictures and all the details this week.

There have been rumours of a MKII RS for a while with 300bhp and AWD but I doubt this is it. They've probably followed the VW model and jazzed up the styling a bit and eeked a bit more power out of it.

Nope I'm wrong, just styling changes so it's still only 222bhp (ha ha only, I wish I had that much power!)

If it does look like that when they release it then I may go and have a look at one just out of curiosity.

Not been interested in any Fords, they just don't seem all that involving to drive, even the quick ones.

Read it this morning in WHSmiths

Same engine, extra chavvy bits...so not to my taste

Im not a fan of any Ford. But then again I felt that way about Peugeot but things have changed since we bought one. lol. Will email a random Ford Stealer tommorow for more info.

a bit different styling but same internals.
probably spending all energy on Focus RS

What is hilarious is all those "special editions" of ST they release every sixth month (seems like).

I have to say I really like the ST  , I looked at R26 Megane and ST3 as well as the Ed30
It certainly has a more agressive look than the Mk5 Golf ( or should be more MaxP ?)
Nice engine , nice noise , only downside appears to be real world fuel consumption.

Not as classy (imho) as the Ed30 but then I'd still be happy with one , and easily tuneable to 300bhp+
And significantly cheaper (but greater depreciation)

still appreciate one when I see them on the road though (as well as R26 , but they seem pretty rare)

Looks nicer than out going model. Think i'd have to have silver and get rid of them chavvy stripes. My mate has an ST3, sounds so damn nice even standard. Only gripe is the consumption of avg 22-24 (or 28mpg if really gentle). No match for my ED30's 28-30 with bluefin  Still much better than my ex RX-8's 20-22mpg.

Want a sweeeter sound with better consumption?? Get an R32!!

Looks like it's trying to hoover the road up with that big front air dam.

It does look better than the MK1 version though, but that's not saying too much

My previous car before the GTI was a new ST-2. I have to say it was pretty decent package for the money  (£15,500) Although I went for a nice discreet colour (black) The engine makes some cracking sounds and you feel the punch of the engine more than in my current std GTI, particularly that extra torque.

Chassis wise it felt more like my std MK 4 Anni - bit 'wallowy and lardy' in the faster bends, more of a big GT than a proper GTI, and does not come close to the std handling of my current GTI.

Had a few rattles here and there which were annoying in a brand new car, (particularly rattling Recaro seats and creaking door seals!) eventually put me off hence the change back to the VAG fold.

I guess overall the Focus has great power and a decent looking interior in St-3 guise, but the downsides are a few rattles here and there, and poor mpg.

Rattles can be fixed, but depreciation cannot!

Anyone who buys a new GTI could have had Focus ST or a VXR (or whatever ) and have some cash to spare . I personally quite like the Focus ST but don't like the fuel consumption figures, badge or rocket like depreciation on these cars. I 've never driven one but also don't like the Autocar quote ' More GT than GTI ' . Love the turbo boost guage though.

Autocar also called this car "one of the best hot hatches on sale".

I don't have have 'badge preference' I'll buy a car on its merits - however if Kia suddenly made a brilliant hot hatch my 'any badge' policy wouldn't be worth the paper it's written on.

From what I understand about the ST it's an absolute belter of a car that melds a highly capable and adjustable chassis with a storming five pot engine all for up to 5k less than a Golf GTI. It's a brilliant buy either secondhand or for those who want a new car but can't quite stretch to 20k for a VW. Humble badge and uninspiring interior aside you just can't knock this car.

No doubt the new one will be even better too.

I test drove one but the interior is very nasty and spoiled what could be a great car.

And that was nursing it I assume; 16-20 mpg was my norm !  Lovely car otherwise.

Not really, best i ever got was 24mpg, 20-22mpg is the norm, redeeming point was it onlu needed 95octane juice.

What a missed opportunity.

If GGR can release 300 reliable BHP from the Focus ST why couldn't Ford have given the '500' an extra 25BHP and made it a run out special.

A bit of extra kit and stripey paint just aren't enough.

The main reason is road tax.  That extra power would mean it would fall in band G (same as a Bugatti Veyron!) so if some reports are to be believed it could be £1000 in a few years, so most (apart from the 3MPS/R32) hot hatches keep below 225g/km of CO2.  This is one reason why the focus RS has been shelved.
