any recommended garages in stoke on trent to get my cars engine set up right ,its a mk2 8v 1992.thanks

print off rubjonnys guide in the maintenence section, take it to an MOT certified place (a good one) and give them the guide and say: ''do what that says!''

job done.

pick the car up, smile lots and pay the chaps!

It usually makes a huge difference to performance to. Once I've fixed the niggles with mine I'm getting it done as it transformed my last 2.

thanks guys,i have used the guide and came across a problem i finally got the isv working and set the idle,i then took off the crankcase breather and unplugged the temp control(blue connecter)to set the co2.thengine ran like a bag of crap straight away and which ever way i turned the adjuster ( in or out ) it made no difference,once i connected it all back up it was fine again.what are your thoughts on this?any help will be very gratefully received.something else that may be connected when i drive the car at low revs it makes like a crackling noise until the revs pick up as though its short of something?thanks again

what kinda price do you pay to get a garage to do RJs tune up?

im just wondering if its worth me buying an advance timing strobe gun and a gas analyser and doing it myself or paying a garage to do it for me?

i live in the south east so garage prices will reflect that. Ive also got a halfords trade card which comes in handy buying tools on the cheap including gunsons gear!  :cool:

Last time I had one done it cost me about £50 so less than the tools to do it myself. Find a local VW specialist, I use one in Basingstoke.

the crackling noise will be the engine pinking. you really are better off taking it to a garage to get it done, especially if your not too confident at doing it yourself. 40 -50 £ should be about what they will ask for, and if its still pinking then you might want to check your knock sensor (located just under where your altenator is attatched to the main block) check all the wiring as this should be well insulated! if not, its an expensive little bit of kit. so if the tune up doesnt work, then get saving, around 40£ i think...

thanks dabill what causes pinking?and do yuo have any ideas as to why nothing happened when i tried to adjust the co2

You don't need a gun with adjustable advance, the mark on the flywheel is set at the advance already. You just need a bog standard strobe gun.  :smiley:

pinking can be caused by cheap fuel, or too much advance.  It sounds like someone has faffed with the engine without having a clue what they're doing, its sad but most digifants end up this way becasue most mechanics assume they can tune it like an old car, unfortunatly not the case!

Set the static & ignition timing first, then worry about the idle/co :)

thanks mate i retarded the ignition timing and it has sorted the pinking,have yuo any ideas about why the co2 adjustment is not making any difference,when i disconnect the breather pipe and temp sender the car ticks over lumpy straight away and when i adjust the alan head it makes no difference?thanks again

could be an air leak, or the throttle body isn't adjusted correctly.  you did rev the engine over 3k 3 times in a row to put the ECU in 'setup mode' as per my guide right? ;)

yes i was following your guide,i was reading a thread about splitting your afm and moving the cog slightly have you ever done this?

I have, but it didnt help! make sure its the very last thing you try :)
vacuum leaks are 1st on the lst, check the pcv bung seal, vac lines, unwind the idle screw and chekc the o'ring, check for cracks in the intake boot etc etc :)
