Hi All,
Posted few times, i persuaded the wife not go for a Leon but the golf...
anyway, i have searched on here but couldnt find a comprehnsive list.
what does the most BASIC bog standard GTI have, ive looked on the VW site at the second hand models which there 'seems' to be alot of 'basic' models.
what ive gathered the basic model has
radio & SINGLE cd player.
electric/heated mirrors
abs
climate control
driver information system 'computer' (not the fancy full monty one?)
esp
FRONT electric windows.
immobiliser
alarm
remote locking
pas
17 inch alloys
I noticed the above spec is on most 2005 models, was anthing added to the 'basic' spec on 06/07 models?
just want to get the most for our money it's a bl**dy nightmare finding which one to buy.
cheers

All the items you have listed are standard to ALL Mk5 GTI's, except that the 5-door version has electric windows front AND back! You want to look at the factory additional Options list for things like armrest, cloth/leather, Xenons or not, Winter pack, etc etc etc etc.
-
As a minimum I wouls say go to 18" alloys and get the armrest. Xenons too if you have the cash
-
I would agree. Xenons are brilliant and make the car look great IMO. The 18's look lovely but I must say I saw a red GTI with 17's and it managed to pull it off really well. The leather in the GTI is good but there have been some issues with the side bolsters (only with hefty people though). Highline computer is nice if you like gadgets etc. If possible. I believe the 2006 models and onwards come with MP3 CD Players and funky silver buttons whereas older models have only gray for the CD Player. And besides that Ipod link is good. But Im not a fan of it.
Oh ya and dont forget. Tinted windows are a must
(Just jokes)
I would assume you are from the UK. Im from South Africa and our GTi's come with pretty much everything standard that the guys in the UK pay extra for.
What colour are you looking at buying? And then of course. 3 door or 5 door?

Highline is also well worth the cash
-
So are colourcoded skirts
With the highline comp you can solve most of the minor issues you may have with the car at home instead of taking it to a dealer.
-
cheers all.
were probably looking at a black GTI with 5 doors
we would love the DSG but the price goes way up even on the secondhand.
I'm going to bling it after a few weeks, tints, colour code the bumpers skirts etc.
I just wondered becuase most of the ones available from VW dealers seem to be basic models?
chees

....It's possibly more likely that those people modding their Mk5's won't be selling them for a while - I've certainly got no plans to sell mine as it's too enjoyable!

In my opinion dont bother with the DSG. But a centre armrest and highline is a must and very good value for your money!!

....DSG is probably out of price range in this instance but don't discount it as an 'automatic' - It's far more flexible and if you drive a variety of road types including urban and heavy traffic it's almost essential. After driver training I now drive my DSG as a manual 90% of the time by using the paddles

armrest is very easy to fit yourself. It cost me about £190 from vag parts and took me half an hour. It adds to the comfort and also makes the interior look complete.
The highline is in my mind essential. I think the black looks okay on the 17"s, and depending on angle, actually prefer it.
I wouldn't pay extra for the VW ipod kit. It is lousy, gives no track info, only 5 playlists and only allows you to advance the tracks one at a time. There are much better after market solutions. I have the harmon kardon and love it.

You have Harman Kardon??? Pictures Please! Specs.
We have a new Harman Kardon DVD Player at home. Extremely expensive but the sound

Hi 08micsta, I meant the Drive+Play ipod kit. Connects to the cd input via a connect2 connection, with the ipod lead in the glovebox. If you want photos though I can get some, I have the display unit in the cubby hole behind the gear lever and the control wheel on the armrest alongside the handbrake.

Oh alright... And how does the setup sound? Is it better than the VW Ipod Prep kit? Becasue the Vw Ipod Prep sounds  it tinny and there is littel bass. We are running ours with a Ipod Nano with bass boost on adn when the car is still then it stunning. But driving is useless.
Where can you buy them? Im from South Africa so my dad may be interested in one. How difficult is it to install?
Thank you
Mike

It installs either via a wired fm transmitter that "cuts" into the aeriel lead or you can put it into the head unit via the aux input.
The fm is far superior to wireless, but still didn't do it for me. I used a connect2 lead to put it into my rcd300 via aux input. Sound quality is very simialr to CD. I found it incredibly easy to install, most worrying was cutting into the earth lead, everything else was fine.
I have the control box under the central tunnel, hopefully you can see everything else in the photos.
