it was suggested to me yesterday that the cause of my engine problems could be down to the MAF sensor. are they the same on all GTi`s or are they model specific as i have a 16v and was wondering whether an 8v would fit?
thanks. bunter

Without reading all your posts.......have you checked the timing? I have just cured one of my GTIs from cutting out due to this???
Just briefly, what are the probs again?
-
no i havent checked the timing, cant really see that being out as it was running fine the last time it was going, it just cut out and never fired back up again.
the problems are all outlined here in my long running saga post: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=63895.0

Basics I know, but has it got a spark at the plugs, any fuel starvation, blocked fuel filter. I remember you put it on VAG COM, what happened there?
-
spark plugs are all working, fuel is being pumped to the fuel rail and injectors but not into the cylinder head as the plugs were bone dry after trying to start the car for a while. will check the fuel filter today as ive just got a haynes manual and can now locate it!
vag-com showed the crankshaft sensor and abs sensor faults, have since replaced the crankshaft sensor
-
How do you know that fuel is getting to the injectors? Sounds like a blockage or maybe low fuel pressure.

this sounds very familiar to bro-in-laws 16v. he has had the car stripped twice and they havent been able to find the problem, hes had the ecu checked as well and that came back fine. hes given up now as its costing too much. hope u find out the problem on yours.

luckily the car cost next to nothing so whatever i do, break it or fix it wont lose out. yeah, the problems very annoying and extremely hard to track down, guess its just a process of elimination. im trying to keep my origional thread found here http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=63895.0 updated with everything i do so it might be of use to youre bro-in-law? :)
-
cheers. the mechanic has hinted that it could be some sort of electrical wiring problem.
-
im leaning towards some sort of sensor rather than wiring itself, unless the wirings been played around with in the past on youre bro-in-laws car then i cant see it being that, but good luck to him and i hope he gets it sorted :)
-
have you changed the fuel pump and ECU relays?
-
yes both of them have been changed along with quite a few other parts :)
-
Ignition leads?
Dizzy cap?
Rotor arm?
spark plugs?
vac hoses?
-
Yo bunter
as i said before mine did the exact same
mine was faulty ignition switch/wiring...
now sorted and running sweet as a nut
although Vag.com says i have a intermittant throttle position sensor fault whatever that means?
other than that, iv done 600 trouble free miles :)
-
That's the sensor in the throttle body that detects the angle of the 'flap' opening. If it's caked in gunk and has trouble mocing freely it will not be working properly within set tollerances and will throw up an intermittant fault

yeah i know where it is but its deff clean as iv cleaned it very well, the flap operates smooth as a nut..
so im going by the "if it aint broke down dont fix it route"
but to be honest if they are cheep enough ill prob replace it at my next service :)

was it behind the steering column cowling?
-
yes took off the cowling, then you will see the barrel, behind this you can see all the wiring which goes to the ignition switch, i was told it was a fault on the ignition switch so bought one from the main dealer, cost £18, but after waggling the wires it worked fine so i havnt used the switch yet, thought id see if it cut out again first which it hasnt.
whoever fitted the immobiliser used scotch clips and block connectors and my car audio mate who fits alarms says this is a big NO NO, he is gonna fit me my Clifford and solder all the conections up again...
in the meantime iv tie wrapped the cables to the barrel and all is good..
if u change the ignition awitch y ou will need to buy a sheer bolt too, they are £1..
gonna put my new switch in regardless, at the same time as when my clifford goes on

If its the same as mine its a whole new throttle body £160 from dealer !!
