Title: golf problems?

picked up my golf this morning and drove it 60 miles home,the car runs and drives well apart from a couple of things.the car sometimes races when idling, most of the time it sat at around 900rpm but sometimes it rose to 1300-1400 i am going to clean the isv out and is there anything else i should check.the oil temp is not showing on the mfa i guess its a sender or wiring where about should i be looking .its a 92 mk2 8v after travelling all over the place i finally bought one.thanks for the help guys

Mines got all sorts of issues like this.

First thing I would try is with the ignition off, see if the throttle micro-switch clicks on the throttle boddy.  Its on the side of the black plastic tab at the front of the throttle body - The throttle stop touches this and activates "idle mode" (thats how my simple brain imagines it anyway!).

Open the throttle, and push the rubber nipple with your finger - it should click.  Theres also a more precise way with a ohm meter in the haynes manual (I can post the method if required).
