Title: 1st gear problems
Post by: Philpy on 04 November 2007, 16:48
Right,
When I got my gti I had no 5th, the gear stick wouldnt go far enough to the right, and with the help of you lot I replaced the short plastic link arm and it sorted it!  All gears spot on

But recently I had to change the engine..... Never done it before but managed it... Everything is fine but since changing the engine its a complete fatherless son to get into 1st. Its although the gear stick wont go far enough to the left... Any ideas what Ive done? I think im going to order a bush kit like ive read about on here, but it must be down to something Ive done as it was fine before I changed the engine, and its the same gearbox as before.
Thanks

The gear linkeage behind the engine needs to be set up and adjusted. It is very difficult to explain how to do it on here, but the haynes book of words will explain it ok.

Take a look at it, there's a u-clamp thingy on the end of a rod going back to the gearstick. You need to fiddle round with that.

Cheers mate, that piece of advice is what I needed! Took a while messing about with it and a few test drives and some burnt arms from the exhaust but its now done
