Title: Glove Box Lid Handle broke off.......with a difference.
Post by: benday007 on 04 November 2007, 09:35
Hi Guys

Run into a problem yesterday, I broke my glovebox handle off, testing the lock on the gove box. I know this is a common problem, I would imagine to stop thieves getting into it if they force the handle???? I have an outer handle on order from VW, Due in tuesday.

But!

I also cannot get the Glovebox Lock out of the Locked postion either! I have tried turned both ways witht he key. and even with considerable force, it remains in the locked position!

I plan to break the handle off when the new one comes in, bt does anyone know a fix getting it unlocked? has anyone exprienced double bad luck with their gloxebox lid before?????

Cheers!!!

Same thing happened to me not so long ago. The handle didn't snap off, but the spring went and rendered it completely useless. After about 20 minutes of sliding a thin flat screwdriver down the gap, exactly where the lock is, you can feel the lever that just needs to be clicked. I think it takes a bit of luck, as you can't see anything at all. Just try and get a feel for it, and it will open as soon as you connect well. I was very relieved, as all it ended up costing me was the replacement handle (all of about 7 quid), even managed to avoid marking it, but wouldn't want to have to do it again! Good luck!!

Handle came today

So... thought I would give it a go, I carefully removed the old handle with use of a drill, Pliers & a screwdriver (tools of a craftsman I know)

Image Mid removal attempt   -   At this point, bear in mind the handle is fixed by two screws, these fix through from the back of the lid, through the inner mech holder. You need to use a scewdriver to carefully prize the handle away from these scres. Remember, it is ok to damage the handle, this is already broken, but try not to damage the inner mech.!

So

Now handle has been removed, you should be able to open the lid.

Now to cure the problem of the stuck barrel

It turned out to be a troublesome Tumbler in the barrel which kept falling out of place, in this case, an easy fix was to remove it. The barrel still locks/unlocks fine!!

Now Handle Barrel is fixed, it can be put into new handle

Job Done!!   --   Remember, B4 refitting parts, ensure there are no bits of plastic etc. left inside the glovebox lid itself, as these will rattle about (it sounds obivous, but it is not at the time!!!)
