Title: Integrated bluetooth installed
Post by: Beefy McMoo on 03 November 2007, 10:12
With a massive amount of help from Stu, over at http://www.octavia-vrs.com/  I've managed to install the OEM bluetooth in my 57 plate GTI.  Installation was fairly easy, but does require a lot of trim to be removed, including the dash pod, see here for a guide
http://www.octavia-vrs.com/technical/bluetooth.html  Although this is for a skoda, it is very similar on the Golf.  Also this is the latest module for compatibilty with the new RNS-510 sat nav, which is my next upgrade once I get the cash.
Anyway with this installed you get full voice activated dialling either just say the number, or name from phone book.  It also integrates with the display and automatically downloads your phone book to the car, so you can dial from the MFSW controls as well.
The whole kit costs around £200, plus delivery, which I did not think was too bad when you compare to the cost of the parrot, with CAN bus controls.

Here are some piccies

The Kit

On the display

The mute button now activates the voice dialling, phone button does nothing, and OK will answer or make calls.

My phone, unfortunatly shows Skoda but Ho-hum small price to pay.

Any way of changing the connection name :undecided:

Surely it's only a software thing. Can you alter the setting in the head unit :undecided:

Why oh why, do they not offer this as an option on the Golf in the first place!

Bonkers,

Good install by the way.

You can change the name in the phone (think it's called short name in phones bluetooth settings)

I've got the parrot bluetooth kit in my car (integrated with phone button on MFSW but no display)   I also have a parrot kit in my MKIV and both pair names showed up as parrot_CK3000 or something.   I've changed both in my phone so one now says Golf GTI and Golf TDI when you connect.

Hi thanks for the comments, I don't think you can change the bluetooth name, as you cannot access any setting in the bluetooth box, but i'm not that bothered about the name on the phone.  Used it a few times now and really impressed with the sound quality, and the voice recognition actually seems to understand what you say, which is a first.
Still don't know why VW do not offer this as an extra, all the mounting brackets are in the car, even the carpet and sound proofing have cut outs to run the cables
if anyone else is interested just contact Stu, his E-mail is admin@octavia-vrs.com  he can supply the Kit, plus if you're close to gosport help with the install.  Like I said before the install is not difficult, you just have to be brave to remove that level of trim, especially as the car was only 1 month old.

I think you got the wrong end of the stick there.   I haven't changed any settings on the car, just in the phone itself.

In my Nokia you go to the Bluetooth menu, then "Paired devices", then select the device name (in your case Skoda_UHV) then "options" assign short name.   I changed mine from parrot to Golf GTI etc.  It now shows up on the phone as connected to Golf GTI.

Great install and very comprehensive report on the Skoda site

I would however like to see the phone button utilised instead of the mute button. Surely there is a way to re-code the unit to use this button to control calls :undecided:

The problem with the phone button is that Skoda and Seat cars that have the bluetooth option have a different layout on the steering wheel.  They do not have a phone button, in its place is the mute button, and the Golf mute button is a voice button.  As far as I know there is no way to use the phone button on the wheel.  Also when the phone rings the display reads Answer or end, so you choose which option with the arrow keys then hit ok, which is more intuative anyway, and means you can easily ignore calls if you like.

Hi Beefy

I was looking into this mod a while ago but couldn't find out if the install would actually work on the Golf or not so didn't go any further with it.

I've got the phone prep in my car so kept hoping VW would release some new cradles.  I found a link to some German VW pages that showed some new cradles, including one for my phone, but I haven't confirmed the availability with my local dealer.

Anyway, I decided to go with the Bluetooth after reading your successful install and placed my order. One question though, did you have to do anything with VAG-COM as on the Octavia site it mentions getting it coded.

Also would this work without MFSW?  I've got MFSW on my car but a friend hasn't and I'm sure he'll want it done after I've done mine!
