2 simple questions:

1) Is there really any point putting an induction kit on a car if you havn't upgraded the exhaust accordingly?

2) What are peoples opinions on the 'best' brand of induction kit?

You get a 'nice' throaty noise, but to be honest a decent drop in panel filter would probably release same performance and be cheaper

the more mods you do; exhaust, induction, head work, cams, chip anything like that they all add to each other.

but like they say the more power you have the more you want..... W12-650 anyone? :rolleyes:

Will make more noise than power gain as stated above. Good place to start so it's in place when you need to change your exhaust plus, with you being able to clean them it'll start paying for itself earlier.

A good filter WITH a good exhaust will increase your Volumetric Efficiency and therefore your power.

So an induction kit is more noise than performance without the exhaust upgrade to go with it? I remember reading somewhere obviously an induction kit brings in more air than a standard box, but without the upgraded exhaust to let that air out there's not much point..

K&N the brand of choice by any chance?

Depends on car but the K&B 57i Induction kits on a MKII Digi 8v are useless. THey sound great but no performance benefit. You're better of replacing the panel filter with a K&N one and drilling the standard airbox. There are also some mods you can do to the standard airbox to make it flow better.

Induction kits are complete hype. Even if they sucked in cold air as opposed to the warm engine bay air, you're still eliminating the benefits of an airbox - ie stable unturbulent air all the way through the rev range. With an induction kit you might possibly gain a small bhp increase, but it wont be as noticeable as the flatspots you'll introduce in your midrange.

panel filter with drilled airbox all the time for me....oh and I am a pipercross fan. :lipsrsealed:

stupid question, but where is the panel filter? Panel filters are definitely cheaper.. and when you say a drilled airbox are talking drilling the original airbox? can anyone direct me on how to do this at all?

Panel filter is what you get as standard. You get better flowing "after market" ones that fit the same hole.

Drilling the airbox is to allow more air in. Only ever drill the un-filtered air side of the box as you should only ever let filtered air into your engine.

Performace filters are all about allowing the air to get into your engine easier thus allowing the induction stroke to be more efficient, unfortunatly if you don't increase the flow through the exhaust you'll not get the benefits of the increased flow.

If you get the exhaust too, then the air in can happen quicker and the exhaust out can happen quicker too, which is a good thing.  :smiley:

Tis exactly what I thought! So would I drill the top side of the box, as I'm looking at it from infront of the car? or is that the filtered side? also how big'a drill bit are we talking?

Which wouldn't make a blind bit of difference as the time the valves open and shut for would still be the same, thus the volume of air entering and exiting the cylinder would still be the same as it would were it on a std panel and std exhaust.

Change the cams to make a noticable difference.
