I have opted for the dealer fitted Ipod cable for my new Ed30, having read the forum it doesn't always get a good write up.So i am looking at buying the Dension kit, i used to have the Icelink fitted to my MK4 GTi but they look to have have changed now.does anyone her have one fitted, the dension site shows the gateway kit that looks to have dash display?. Or how about the Harmon Kardon kit, gets a good write up but the wee joy stick thing looks to be a bit of an eye sore.
posted this in the MK5 section as i want to see/hear from people with this kit in their MK5 GTi/Ed30's any pics of the instal would be good to epec where the kit is mounted.
Thanks

I use the Harmon Kardon kit and I have to say its superb and pisses all over the dealer fit option for functionality. The wheel isnt too unsightly if you mount it down by the gearstick.
-
Duzza perfect mate any chance you can post a pic of the instal as you have an Ed30 that would be perfect.

Thats all I have to hand.
Seriously though, you can pick it up for £50 now which is a bargain! The dealer kit is woeful in comparison

Duzza you have just help me make my mind up what to put in my car for my Ipod - do you have a model name/number for that system by any chance? where can I buy it?
Cheers in advance mate!

the dealer kit is shiiiite!
Im looking at getting rid of it and installing a 3rd party one.
Problems i have with using the VW one is that it takes ages to go forward or back when skipping tracks and the display is carp
-
yes dealer kit is sh!te, but even if you use the denison one it doesnt make any difference as any VW headunit will not reconise track names, only 5 playlists, even the new RNS 510, as I have found out still treats the ipod as a CD changer and wont display track names.

In that case im sticking to the VW kit

Apart from the Harman Kardon one which gives you display info, albeit on a seperate screen.
Incidentally the whole thing lights up blue at night so matche the golf interior well

Duzza,
I am having one of these fitted on Sunday. Where did you decide to put the handwheel and the ipod lead? Do you have any more pics please?
I am thinking of putting the handwheel in the cupholder thing, so it can be hidden, and the pod either in glovebox or the cubby to the right of the steering wheel.
Like your screen in the middle, did you have to cut anything to get the cable through? Can you read it ok?
I was originally thinking of putting the screen in the corner of windscreen behind the A pillar.
Too many choices!

I have the wheel down by the gear stick, toward the drivers side. I would seriously advise against putting it in the cup holder area! You wont be able to get to it properly! I have the lead in the glove box but its probably better in the cubby under the headlight switches tbh.
No probs reading the screen at all, you can adjust the backlight and contrast and can have different size fonts. From a few months use now I think the screen is right in the centre. No drilling required, the lead to the screen just runs around the top vent/grille thingy (under it obviously) and then out by the sensor as per the photo.

Thanks for the info Duzza!

I had the same dilemma as you a few months back. I bought the Ice>Link and sent it back after 1day. Its just the VW headunit isn't up to the job of controlling an iPod.
So in the end i opted for installing a Connect2 Aux adapter with a good quality 3.5mm stereo lead, which simply plugs into the headphone jack on the top of the iPod. This way you can just use the iPod and can play whatever song you like, shuffle, skip etc.
I've got the lead coming out in the roller shutter storage thing by the hand brake. Left enough slack so i can easily hold the iPod when its plugged in. The sound quality is good (with the E
To be this seemed the best solution without changing the VW OEM headunit to an aftermarket one. I've take some pics if anyone is that interested

But that's just an FM transmitter with a fancy display. The dealer kit, like the dension (which I've used in previous cars) takes a line level output from the iPod straight into the head unit for optimum sound. Granted it doesn't feature a nice display, but it does feature superior sound, which is what matters most. All I really need is the ability to click on a playlist and then have it shuffle it's way through it. On occasions where I'd want a specific album, it's pretty easy to pick up the iPod, select it, then pop it back in. Still happy I ordered the dealer kit.

Erm, no it isnt.
The HK kit takes a feed straight from the iPod via a lead and straight in to the heaunit via the conversion box. The sound quality is excellent. So to sum up, it does everything the dealer kit does but with its own display and allows complete control of the iPod not the watered down version the dealer supplies. Oh and at under half the price

On their website it says it uses an FM transmitter.

It can use the in-line FM transmitter but it also can be plugged directly into a line-in socket without using the FM transmitter. An adaptor is used to link the drive & play into the head unit CD changer socket.
Yes it's better than the dealer kit - and only £25.

Intrigued by the Harmon Kardon unit, a bit worried about security. The wee screen looks like a GPS screen and we all know the problems on that front. Do you end up having to disconect and hide the display unit?

Am interested to see the set-up.

When you see it in the flesh youll realise it looks nothing like a satnav unit. I dont think even a thief could be that stupid. **Awaits smashed Ed30 window now**

What he said.

Fair enough. I stand corrected.

I'm with Duzza on this one. The Harmon Kardon is great. Mine's installed differently from his though. Screen is to the right of the instrument binnacle and the controller between handbrake and gearstick, next to a SonyEricsson bluetooth button. I have a Road Angel which sits in the middle so I think the screen to the right is more tidy. Anyone near Glasgow is welcome to see it anytime.

its got a stadard av if memory serves. anyway you need the appropriate 'connects2' box from your local car audio shop which allows you to connect the hk unit to the headunit via the cd changer socket

I've got the dealer kit in mine, can the h/k screen and controller be fitted in the line between the VW armrest ipod dock and the headunit? That way i'd still get the neat solution - not being able to find tracks or albums is seriously annoying!
-
I reckon you could put the controller where I did and the screen in the wee space behind the ashtray. That would be quite tidy.

could you put the controller next to the window controls on the driver side so its hidden away?
-
Yes but not as easy and there needs to be enough cable to run that distance.
-
I have just taken the VW ipod lead out and put in a Hardon Kardon ipod controller with a connect2 adaptor and my first impressions are that it is a million times better, there is no delay in changing track and you control it just like an ipod.
And there only £30 on ebay at the moment including the carriage.
The only thing i have noticed is that it doesnt switch the ipod off like the VW one did.

No it doesnt, which confused me but I have left it plugged in generally and theres been no noticeable battery drain etc.

eagerly reading this, the HK unit looks good.
I see theres a HK version 2 that has remote and colour screen.
Anyone on here used this? Not sure its even available in UK + some not so good reviews in US sites.
Still searching for a good ipod/bluetooth/phone solution tbh

Anyone got the dimensions of the harman screen? I had an idea if it will fit in the glasses case area on the room in a custom build as i know you can fit a din sized faceplate in there so its down to the height of it,

Hi all,
i am new here, the 4th one should be the one i need right? http://www.nexxia.co.uk/iPod_MP3_Adaptors/vw.htm
