During a rare (!) hour of work boredom i amused myself by getting an insurance quote for a VR6, to my suprise it was not much more than i'm paying for my mk3 16v.
Obviously i then looked on autotrader for some VR6s and found some very, very decent sounding ones for less than ?6k, by trading in or selling the 16v i will be able to afford this.
Should i get one? My main concern is running costs. What do people here get in terms of mpg?
What would people recommend re mileage, age, service history, etc.
Also i've seen Highline editions, some are really expensive, some are similar to normal, are these good? Why the price difference? Are there "fake" highlines that are overpriced?
Any info or recomendations would be much appreciated.
I'm quite excited.
-
The things to check are basically the same as the valver, there are good ones and bad ones. Loads of bargains to be had.
The highlines have leather, aircon, heated seats etc..
I get high 20mpgs out of my vr, if i drive sensibly, even a bit more. Drive it mad and it will sink to low 20's.
The vr is quicker than the valver, and has loads more mid range torque.
A few mods will easily get it up to 200bhp, induction kit, exhaust and chip.
Where abouts are you?
The best thing to do is go out and drive one, see if you like it.
-
Its best to go for one with service history and low miles, ie under 90k, there are loads around.
-
Thanks for the tips.
I'm going to keep an eye out for a Black Highline (manual, obviously). mmmmmmmm (except wooden gear knob, eewwww)
MPG sounds only a bit worse than 16v. Thats ok.
I live near Horsham in West Sussex, i assume you want to know if i'm close enough to lend me your VR6 for the weekend ;D
-
I'm at Woking, surrey if ya need any help.
-
Cheers mate. I'm seriously thinking about it now.
-
do it :D
happy wit my valver right now though :)
-
yeah i love the 16v, but i have an acute top-of-the-range disorder. I did consider getting a VR6 first time round, but the insurance was a bit silly, ever since there's been a nagging feeling that there's something better available.
Anyone know a cheap physchiatrist? This could lead to serious problems in later life. Houses, wives, etc... :-[

Evenin all, i've been reading through these forums for a while now, so i thought i'd curb the shyness and introduce myself ;D I've always particularly liked Mk3s, my first car was a 95 Golf Mk3 1.4L this thing was as fast as a Rover Metro (60bhp :o :o) but hey it never broke down or gave me any major problems. It got my a$$ to uni and back everyday and was my best companion for a good 3 years but naturally (as we all do) the time has come to trade in the old girl for something with a bit more grunt. Right now i'm torn between the natural upgrade, a GTi 16v or an Audi A3 1.8T, in your non-biased opinions what is the better complete car in terms of build quality, interior, handling and performance? Anybody owned an A3 before? Normally i would always choose the Golf but frustratingly i'm finding there is a lack of good condition/low mileage/3dr/black Mk3 16v's available.
I would love to push for the VR6 but i'm still on the young side with NCB......yet, insurance would be :o :o :o
-
never been in a 1.8t, but i'd expect the build quality to be comparable. anyone?
theres a bit of a difference in cost isn't there?
funny you mention those 2 cars, i have a friend with a dragon green mk3 5dr valver, last time i saw him he was talkin about getting a 1.8t (or a TT)
personally i dont like the smaller audi's and class the TT as a posers car.
you're right about the lack of mk3 16vs of that calibre.. took me a while, was lucky to get the leather, AC and sunroof too, mileage wasn't exceptionally low (75k).. but better than most :) .. oh and black is a b!tch to keep clean

Fantastically i have just had a great offer of a VR6 Highline. R reg, all the spec, fvwsh, 37,000 miles(!).
A mate is a postman and some old chap on his round is selling it for his son who is minted and has three cars. He has just moved to hong kong for two years for work and wants to get rid of it. He thinks it's worth ?4,500 to ?5,000 but mainly wants a quick sale. I haven't seen it yet, but if it's what he says then it's a bargain!
This means that my mk3 16v is now for sale. See the cars for sale section for all the details.
-
bargain indeed!!
is it pink or something? :D
-
erm, nearly!!!
It's the mulberry purple colour, which i quite like. And luckily it has full black lether not the black with purple bits in the middle.
-
:o :o BARGAIN! :o:o snap his hand off!!!! listen to the voices and buy it!! If the insurance company bite your ass then you can flog it and make a tidy profit!
Bet you wont though!!! Drive it and try stop grinning like an idiot!! ;)
-
I'm trying to get hold of this bloke to snap his hand off! He's a bit elusive.
The insurance is an extra ?190 for the remaining 7 months. So that works out at about ?1,010 based on this years premium, should be less next year, i'll be 22 and have a year's no claims (finger's crossed).
However i still need to sell the 16v! Again see cars for sale section. It's very nice!
VR6 ;D ;D ;D I want it now!!!!!!!!
-
frustratingly i'm finding there is a lack of good condition/low mileage/3dr/black Mk3 16v's available.
3 doors? How impractical! Black? hard to keep clean as Overseer says!
What you need is a Dragon Green, 5 door! Service history is more important than mileage, as long as it's under 100k your fine!
In fact i know where there's one of those going right now! You should buy it!
-
bargain, hey if you dont get for some reason, I'll have it!!
.......money sitting waiting!!!!!
am looking for a VR6 for the Missus BTW.
-
I had to drop my mates mulberry highline off for some work to be done, and it was very nice... sweaty bum in the summer i imagine with that leather mind you :o
Its not as fast as other cars ive owned, but the engine note more than makes up for it , and it drove very smoothy... Its a toss up at the moment for a vR6 or another corrado G60..superchargertastic mate... :P ;D
-
Air con should help keep the bum dry hopefully. My last car with leather was a bit warm in summer. Renault 19 16v (don't take the p1ss, i was young and niave).
A VR6 is fast enough for me and has plenty going for it apart from speed.
I thought about a Corrado, they are pretty nice but personally i prefer the golf.
Omar, don't suppose "the missus" would be interested in another mk3 16v?
-
^ hmmm??.... send me the details anyways, I'll ponder over it.
-
it's in the cars for sale section, called Mk3 GTI 16v.
-
I've had 35.5mpg best out of my vr6 corradoaccording to mfa on a run which int bad for such a big motor, obvioulsy u can get low 20s if ya drive it hard, which is hard not too/
Insurance is no more, and cant see running costs being drasticly worse then a 16v golf. as long as you buy sensibly. i know of vr6's comein up too 200k and still going strong, luckily mine is nowhere near that.
Buy one, the sound is amazeing :)
