Rockford fosgate are good, you should deffo look into one of their packages

id stay well away from cheeper brands as they, at best sound bad and wooly.

As with most things...what u pay for is what u get

you didnt say what size sub you want either?

amp

but if your budget needs to include wiring and box then maybe look at something like this

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_236771_langId_-1_categoryId_98186
or

and i would disagree with kells *As with most things...what u pay for is what u get*

budget kit has come a long way in the past few years and its more about how its installed than how much the kit has cost;)

a lot of it depends on what you want as idealy you would design/build your own sub box to suit your sub,car and music tastes as prefab boxes never do the subs justice :( even vibe boxes are tuned way too high just to make them sound louder and you miss out on the proper low bass because of it.

really depends what you want but a 10" sub would provide enough bass to overpower your std speakers.

main reason i recommended 10`s was they tend to be slightly cheaper :)

its more about setting headunit and amp up properly and have a play with positoining the sub to see what sounds best.

cheep gear sounds cheep, sorry but it does, when u compair to something like, say, a rockford (which can be had for good money nowdays) or better still a Focal, you really understand why i say it..

i had a 10inch rockford in my mk 3, just swapped it for my new 10inch Focal, same head unit, amp etc, and the sound quality is just a total transformation, and the bloody rockford was very good....better than most iv heard.

the focal is like £350 retail where as the rockford is about half that...

hence why i say, what u pay is what u get.....

but each to their own, if you think budget gear is good enough for you then fair play, but you are missing out

agreed

save your pennies - perhaps pop in decent speakers instead of a budget sub and amp... you'll get more quality for your initial investment

Agreed with the point of what your saying about quality Ice. But Im currently undergoing two installs. I have a Monster JL Audio install going into my caddy. The 4 13W6 subs are £500 each on there own. But I also have a monster MAC audio system going into my Mk1 Jetta when my engine work is complete. My 4 12" mac audio subs are incredible value for money and cost less than one of my JL subs.

Its best to hear a few different systems and see what you like. Personally I would stay away from Fusion,Mutant and anything Ripspeed.
If your in the Reading/Berkshire area I can give you the number of a mate of mine who owns an Ice shop. He can sort out some really good deals

im not running budget kit but that is only cos i compete if i just wanted an everyday system i would prob spend half my budget on kit and half on installation.

i have heard very high end kit sound sound very average cos of installation yet i have also heard budget kit from the likes of fusion sound extremely impressive for the price.

yes good kit if installed properly will sound better but if your on a tight budget why blow it all on 1 good part and be let down by the rest of the system?

It is ABSOLUTELY the case that installation and setup is the key.

If you have even half-decent sound up front, the addition of even budget sub-bass can make a system sound so much bigger.  It will even improve the sound quality up front, as you won't be having to boost your bass any more - resulting in clearer midrange from the front.

You definitely don't have to go mad either.  I currently run a JBL GT4 12", powered from a JBL 75.2, in a standard JBL ported enclosure.  Sound quality is good, it integrates well with my front end, and does not sound at all wooly.  They are obscenely cheap now.

That kit contains everything you'd need, and being a sealed box, would also sound a little more musical.  In terms of value for money, you'd be hard pushed to find anything better value.  Provided you set up the amp properly, you wouldn't be disappointed.

That looks pretty damm good for the price. I dont need anything spectacular so this is right up there.

I used to be big into car stereos, have put various things into various cars with different budgets, MTX, JBL, RF Kicker subs, Phoenix gold, Alpine, Macaudio amps, and more different speakers than i can remember and I agree entirely with what has already been said.
The setup of any system is the key to getting it to sound good.  But with that said the inside of a car is a terrbile place to try and reproduce good quality music.  To even get close to anything that you'd consider awe inspiring on the SQ front you're going to need sound deadening all round, upgraded front speakers, new cabling, a GOOD (and by that read expensive) amp, a sub box built specifically for your car and musical tastes - a sub that also falls into that catagory, a top end head unit, and probably an EQ.

The maximum i think I've spent on any one install was somewhere topping £2500, and even then I wasn't entirely happy with what was coming out..... it's not an easy task.

So getting back on topic, my mk2 has got upgraded but factory sized speakers up front and in the back.  They were however not expensive (JBLs in the back, and vibes in the front) TBH they don't sound a great deal better than the originals in a car with no sound deadening, a stainless exhaust and K&N..... they are running straight off a nakamichi head unit (which admittedly is nice, but again, wouldn't be that much different from any 70 quid sony xplode in actual audio quality), and in the boot is a 12" FLI active sub which I bought from Halfrauds this morning for £120.

It's an all in one unit, comes complete with all the wiring, sealed enclosure so the sound remains tight for rock/pop/classical type stuff, but in fairness did pretty well with a random R&B CD I chucked in to test it.

For the money it's a cracking unit, and if you do only want to spend £150, then I don't think you would be going far wrong.  If you kept the gain set fairly low, but the crossover up a fair way, turned your bass down on the HU so you could put that little bit more volume through your standars, then if you're not a music producer, or audiophile I think you'll be happy enough.

Totally agree, im not after massive boxes amps etc i like a decnet sized box with an unbeleivable quality of sound and theres one that does it better than most and that is Rokford. Very expensive as a 100-200w bass box will probably cost around the same as boxes that other manufacturers do at 500-1000w but even at this level id say Rockford would sound better.

If your on a budget though id stay away from Rockford, but if i was you id save up and buy it bit by bit.
